Possible bad amp, need suggestions

The amp in question: Soundstream Van Gogh 800.5
The sub in question: Alpine 10inch TypeR 4+4ohm

Got it installed, and everything was fine for an hour. Then it started activating "Short circuit protection" mode on the amp, which means it kept resetting every second. When disconnecting the sub, everything was fine again. Got a new sub (exchanged), thinking that was the problem, and put the new one in. This one only lasted 5 minutes before doing the same thing.

Disconnected the RCAs for the main speakers, and found it still happening. Turned the gain to 0 for the sub, and it stopped. Adding any kind of gain caused it to cut off.

So...what the hell is happening? Bad amp, or something else? The wiring is correct, since the main speakers played for hours yesterday sans amp without a hitch.

sounds like the amp's problem. get it checked out and see if its worth fixing

I can easily RMA it, but I need to know if it's the amp, or if I should try something else, otherwise its a waste of everyones time+money

exchange it, then sell it. buy something better. soundstream isn't to good.

If the amp is newer it should have some sort of warranty. Check into that first.

If not get an estimate. SOme places the estimate is free, others will charge you a minimum amount ($30-40). With this amp it may be worth having it checked.

No need to worry about the warranty, it's covered for 30 days by the people who sold it to me. I just want to make sure it's the amp itself, and not another part of the system (Headunit?).

ok so its a 5 channel? im assuming its 4 channels for speakers and one for a sub?how much power is that sub channel putting out and most importand HOW is it hooked up to youre sub?

400w @ 2ohms on the sub channel, sub is wired parallel

Double check ALL of your wiring that you did. Even the simple stuff like + to + from amp to sub and so on. I uninstalled and reinstalled my system for some reason once and I accidentally routed a negative wire from the amp to the positive on the sub.

i had a problem similar to that with a sony amp. it turns out i had the sub wired wrong and the final impedance going to the amp was too low and it couldnt handle it. i think the amp could only handle a 2 ohm load and i was presenting it with a 1 ohm load. then it died. sony crap......
