I don't think 'egos' has anything to do with it. I think the military takes advantage of the average easily influenced teenager by visiting high schools every week or so. Those teens who are susceptible to those glorious war stories are future soldiers, however, I think plenty of people are mature enough at 18 or 19 to handle drinking. For instance I think I'm very mature and responsible when I drink and I'm only 19, yet a couple of buddies of mine are completely reckless at 21. Regardless, if I'm young enough to die for my country and everyone on this board, I should be god damn able to buy a beer.GlassWolf wrote:because you have enough on your plate at that age without the added responsibility of drinking.
kids wreck enough cars without being drunk already.
Trust me, at 18 most aren't mature enough to handle liquor.. as evidenced by all of these reported MIP citations.
The military takes kids at 18 because you're still naive enough to think you're invincible at that age, so they can train you to jump in front of flying bullets a lot easier than they could convince an older person to do the same.
also, better physical health. Things go downhill after 25.
There are a lot of mature, responsible teenagers out there, but a far greater number of immature teenagers out there. Just think about if everybody you knew that was 18 could go get drunk anytime and anywhere they wanted to and think of how immature they are when they drink. Can you imagine how much higher it would cost just to get car insurance if 18 was the drinking age? It's hard enough for a teenager to afford car insurance as it is, especially if you're a male. It's difficult enough to keep adults from driving drunk, but teenagers that think that they're invinsible and can handle it would be even worse. The extra pressure on the police department and the potential need for even more of them on your ass and the extra money it would cost to support them would be terrible as well.
The other aspect of it is that teenagers go through a lot of changes, have to deal with a lot of new experiences that can lead to a bad emotional state often causing severe depression or worse depending on how they handle it, but it's experience and age that should teach you how to cope with it. But many will get sucked into resorting to "other methods" which may and often does include becoming an alcoholic. And 18 is right around the worst age as far as someone's emotional state because most are graduating, moving out, going to college, getting on their own basically, having relationships and the related troubles that are likely to come along with that, as well as the hormones, mood swings, and woes that are just part of being a teenager. Those 3 years would create a lot more alcoholics in the world, people change a LOT between 18 and 21.
That isn't personal toward anybody, it's a situation where one bad apple spoils the bunch. And it isn't like kids aren't going to drink anyway, but they aren't going to do it quite as freely and when it's illegal to them they're often pretty much forced to do it in a relatively controlled manner.

dude i got 7 mic/mips when i was younger i finally got my license back this year after 8 years without it cuz i refused to go to asap. the bad thing is is that i was never drunk when i got these usually sipping a beer at a party then cops showed up. i got 1 in my apartment when i was 17 they came in cuz they had a complaint about a party and even though i was the only one there they demanded to search my house and held me up against the wall with a gun then proceeded to look through my house. they took my collection of alcohol and dumped it then gave me a mip i wasnt drinking at all that time i just had a few bottles in my kitchen.

Well any laws that are made through generalities will always have strong opposing arguments. Laws that abide to the individual won't have as much of an opposing argument. I think drinking should be a law enforced on the individual, but that'll never happen. It's kind of annoying you just thinking your smarter because your older, I'm being 'rationale' and I agree with Jonathan.GlassWolf wrote:shhh, John, not so loud. they're still young enough to know everything. no point in using logic, history, statistics, and rationality here!
