I have an Alpine IVA-D310 that "mates" with a Blackbird NAV unit via a PMD-DOK1. Here's the problem. The NAV displays fine on the 310 when docked, but getting the 310 to control the Blackbird is..... tempermental. And, accessing the setup requires the same steps as viewing a DVD (e-brake dance :sm29: )... silly. This option is not cheap either, but it's not prohibitively expensive. But, if you go this way, just buy the Alpine "universal" remote, it seemed much simpler in the end.. at least, for me. Perhaps one day soon I will be able to actually "fix" the nav issue.

Your best bet will be to wait for the new pioneer D3. It should be out next week and it retails for $1000. It will come with built in Navi, satellite radio control, DVD/CD mp3 vcd etc.. and it also has the new technology of controlling your Ipod through the head unit. even the video portion. Very neat feature and by far the cheapest that incorporates it all.
I also like the kenwood 6019, but it doesnt have the Ipod video control
That goes for like 1200 on ebay after shipping.

well.. now days you can have a car pc that boots up fast.. mp3car.com

i belive the powersupplys availble for them make it possible to go into a hibernate/sleep mode when you turn the car off, and then when it comes back on you'll essentially be where you were before.

Also, i'm sure there is a tiny linux distrobution out there that would also work.. beilve there is one that has been developed or is in the process of being developed... but there are numerous small-footprint linux distrobutions out there, but they may lack stuff like a decent GUI, or a GUI at all.

With windows, you can just disable all the crap you don't want or use to speed things up.

I'll have to look around a bit more at the Pioneer and some other companies that offer this.
One way to do it is to use computer parts in your car...
I'm not a fan because of using stuff that's not meant for the harshness of being in a car, and because of the whole computer boot-up time.

Check out one of those Xenarc setups, or one of the in-car computer systems that is non-windows based. The hardware for them is tucked into a system about the size of an external DVD drive, and there are several touch-screen in-dash flip outs with built in DVD/CD rom drives.
In fact, there are DIN-sized computers, with aux inputs and USB ports if you have a double din space available:

Prices can still come in under what many of those in-dash DVD/touchscreen/nav/CD head unit flip-outs cost, too.

Kenwood makes a nice DD unit that has a separate Solid State Nav unit you can get the combo for around 1100.00 on ebay I believe it's the 6019 but not 100% sure.

Another option for double din would be the Jensen VM9021TS, single would be the VM9511TS those integrate with their NAV100 system.

if he can fit double din the avic-d1 or d2 sounds like it fits the bill

Pioneer and Eclipse are the only brands that make units worth while. You are going to pay no matter what if you want GPS. Hell, the first unit Pioneer made with GPS, the AVIC-N1, still goes used on eBay for around $750.

I was thinking the carputer route, but I've never done one before, and I don't think he's up for that hardcore of a route into his car (trying to find an extra cubby in my truck for a carputer tho).
