well.. now days you can have a car pc that boots up fast.. mp3car.com

i belive the powersupplys availble for them make it possible to go into a hibernate/sleep mode when you turn the car off, and then when it comes back on you'll essentially be where you were before.

Also, i'm sure there is a tiny linux distrobution out there that would also work.. beilve there is one that has been developed or is in the process of being developed... but there are numerous small-footprint linux distrobutions out there, but they may lack stuff like a decent GUI, or a GUI at all.

With windows, you can just disable all the crap you don't want or use to speed things up.

Your best bet will be to wait for the new pioneer D3. It should be out next week and it retails for $1000. It will come with built in Navi, satellite radio control, DVD/CD mp3 vcd etc.. and it also has the new technology of controlling your Ipod through the head unit. even the video portion. Very neat feature and by far the cheapest that incorporates it all.
I also like the kenwood 6019, but it doesnt have the Ipod video control
That goes for like 1200 on ebay after shipping.

I have an Alpine IVA-D310 that "mates" with a Blackbird NAV unit via a PMD-DOK1. Here's the problem. The NAV displays fine on the 310 when docked, but getting the 310 to control the Blackbird is..... tempermental. And, accessing the setup requires the same steps as viewing a DVD (e-brake dance :sm29: )... silly. This option is not cheap either, but it's not prohibitively expensive. But, if you go this way, just buy the Alpine "universal" remote, it seemed much simpler in the end.. at least, for me. Perhaps one day soon I will be able to actually "fix" the nav issue.
