Touch Screen-GPS and HU
Hey guys, I'm not too knowledgeable in this area and I know many of you guys install stuff like this often. A friend of mine was interested in putting in a touch screen that will be able to do GPS and act as his HU. What sort of options does he have and what kind of prices? I saw the Eclipse ones on woofersetc.com and those are pretty pricey. Outside of that, I have no clue myself.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!

They also have navigation in the 700, but its not touch screen.
If he wants all that hes going to pay for it dearly.

Pioneer is shifting their priorities to GPS nav systems... they have several models now. One consideration is whether your friend also wants it to play DVDs or not.
Or, you can check out one of the in-car computer type solutions, which would be more flexible ultimately, allows you to buy the DVD drive/touch screen separate from the actual computer hardware, and software for that matter. You could even run Windows from your car, and have the thing set up to be connected to your wireless home network from your driveway so you could simply suck your MP3's onto it whenever you wanted.
http://www.mp3car.com is one forum that deals with those type systems.

I was thinking the carputer route, but I've never done one before, and I don't think he's up for that hardcore of a route into his car (trying to find an extra cubby in my truck for a carputer tho). I also don't believe he wants DVDs because he thinks he's going to crash if he gets one (and I agree, he doesn't need it :) ).
I'll have to look around a bit more at the Pioneer and some other companies that offer this.

Another option for double din would be the Jensen VM9021TS, single would be the VM9511TS those integrate with their NAV100 system.

One way to do it is to use computer parts in your car...solacedagony wrote:I was thinking the carputer route, but I've never done one before, and I don't think he's up for that hardcore of a route into his car (trying to find an extra cubby in my truck for a carputer tho). I'm not a fan because of using stuff that's not meant for the harshness of being in a car, and because of the whole computer boot-up time.
Check out one of those Xenarc setups, or one of the in-car computer systems that is non-windows based. The hardware for them is tucked into a system about the size of an external DVD drive, and there are several touch-screen in-dash flip outs with built in DVD/CD rom drives.
In fact, there are DIN-sized computers, with aux inputs and USB ports if you have a double din space available:

Prices can still come in under what many of those in-dash DVD/touchscreen/nav/CD head unit flip-outs cost, too.
