false floor keeping access to spare?

Post by lotas »

alright heres my dilemna. i want to put in a false floor in my trunk, the only problem is i still want access to my spare tire.

now normally someone would say its either no spare tire or no false floor, but id rather not go that route.

im thinking i can put a hinge somewhere that basically lifts up half the false floor, putting the hinge before the sub box, bolted to the false floor.

now wait, if this even was possible (which im not sure it is) couldnt a thief just open it right up, if they figured it out?

all good questions, so i need some help and ideas? could i put a padlock somewhere? somehow lock the hinged side?

is this hinge thing even possible?

thanks

I think it's possible, take some pics so we can get an idea of what we'd be working with.

i will take some pics when i get a chance, ill try to find another honda trunk...my sub box has a few screws in it and stuff and i dont really want to take it out until i start the project which is april 4th for spring break.

gonna have to make a new sub box. might do a custom box with some fiberglass to get it as far back as possible (my trunk gets pretty low as you go towards back seats) its about a foot out from the back seats right now with the kicker behind it :-/ thats what i dont like.

anyways the main purpose i want to do a false floor is for security, so obviously the reason i cant just do a hinge is because anyone could just lift it up. I need to create some sort of security feature for it. or just something tricky and time consuming to figure out.
anyways ill get on those pics will

This sounds similar to what I have been thinking about doing with my new sub box. I also have a honda, its a 99 accord and the trunk on it gets smaller as you get closer to the seat too. It may be a tricky build, but I have nothing but time :)

I'm going to post some pics of mine too soon. Good Luck, btw.

sure you can do this.
I used to do this in CRXs all day long.
hinge the forward edge of the tire cover board, then attach the sub box to the board, so you rock the box forward and that exposes the tire.
very easy to do.

you make a new tire well cover from plywood or MDF.
you hinge the board at one end, and mount the hinges to the car so the board opens like a big door.
you screw teh bottom of the sub box to the tire well cover, so the back of the sub box is right at the hinges. then you just rock the box backward onto its backside, and that opens the tire well up.

so basically the only dilemna in that solution there is will the sub box clear the roof of the trunk when being rocked back?

I have been following this thread because I'm planning a smilar design for my Accord sedan. I haven't removed my sub box yet, but I don't think there will be room to have the sub box roll back if you are mounting them up against the back seat (I believe that is what you said you're plannin on).

What I have tenatively planned is making a false wall that would serve as the face of my sub box with the speakers facing the rear of the trunk. That way when you looked into the trunk you would just see the two speakers and none of the rear deck or anything else. I think I will make my false floor out of two pieces with the hinge at the point where the wall is. That should allow me to lift up the floor from the back of the trunk in order to access my amp. I'm also planning on some plexiglass just above the spare tire area with my amps mounted above the spare tire (if there is enough room) upside down and back panels removed to show off the circuit boards through the plexiglass. I'm not sure where I will put my crossover or fuse block, but it might fit in there too.

It should look pretty nice when finished off with a little neon to accent the circuitry and all. This is a pretty ambitious project for my first custom install, but I think the plans are finally starting to materialize. I'm still trying to determine what type of material to use for the floor. It is a pretty large space so I'm unsure what thickness would be sufficient to prevent any warping and be able to sustain the weight of the amps pulling down on it from below. I'm thinking MDF, but I don't think I need something 1/2 inch.

Keep us posted on what you plan to due and include some pics if you can when you get started. I will be sure to do the same.
