amp/sub combo options

Post by SC3.8buick »

Hey everyone. I am planning on upgrading my entire sound system in my 89 LeSabre. I already have speakers (Infinity Reference 4x6s and 6x9s) that I got from a friend's totaled car. I was hoping to get your advice on amp/sub combinations. I know I want 2-12" subwoofers (possibly Alpine TypeR's) but the amp is where my real questions are. This will be my first real system so I was looking for some of your input on what would sound best in this car. Thanks
~Colin

if you have room id suggest 1 15 in a proper enclosure will work just as good if not better than 2 12s

Do you have a budget for you amp/sub combo? Do you already have wiring or will that need to added to the budget? Are you going to have a box built for the subs you purchase? Still some information left out.

Alpine Type R's are good, a good streat beater sub. Now if you need two of them.... i doubt it. There are people on here who have experience with just using 1 of them and they are extremely happy. With the right amount of power and a box designed by someone who knows how to get the most out of the sub, a single Type R is plenty for most people.

Or 18, if it'll fit. You're not paying much more for a larger diameter sub and you're getting free DBs!

Colin, First let me welcome you to CAC :)

As for your choice in subs... It'll make for a pretty decent first system, and I'm assuming that you are looking for something that will just be an all around good daily driving system that gets plenty loud (a.k.a. Boomcar, SQL).
So you're probably going to want to look into a decent 1000watt rms x 1 @ 1ohm amp (assuming that you are looking at the dual 4ohm voice coil subs... recommended). Those subs can handle slightly more power than they are rated at (500w RMS), but with your stock alternator on your LeSabre (should be a 105 amp alt) you'll be perfectly safe running an amp of 1000w RMS with just a good battery.
As for your enclosure (box) you'll want to have one specifically built for your subs for the best performance (something tuned between 32-38Hz), Check with Ryan (our local box builder) in the Basstronics thread to get a qoute on a good box ;)

There isn't really a set budget. I don't want to spend $10,000 for this system but I am willing to spend more for better quality parts. Yes I am going to have a box built after I decide on what sub's to buy. As for the size, Im really not sure what size subwoofer/box would fit. It is a 1989 Buick LeSabre so the trunk is fairly large. What amp and sub combinations would you recommend? and possibly the RMS and price for these if you know them? Also, thanks cargodz, for the welcome and the info. Part of my next post was about having someone here build the box for me.

My original plan was the 2 Alpine TypeR's and an Alpine PDX1.1000 amp. Would this setup work or is it even the right amp to power these sub's? I had been loking at this for a little while but the cheapest I can find the PDX1.1000 amp anywhere is ebay ($469). Has anyone seen this cheaper?

Well that's why I came here. I realize that I dont know as much as the people here and I certainly don't have the experience to know what's good and what's not. That was just my original plan, before I found out about this site.
