Kicker setup(750.1 amp)

Post by A college kid »

So, just recently I installed my first system. I have a Kicker 750 mono amp wired in series to two Kicker CompVR 12s 4 ohm dvc in a sealed Qlogic box. This setup has been causing hella electrical problems in my car (as evidenced by my other post)but I also have some audio questions. What are some common problems that make an amp go into protection mode after playing it for a while? And will a ported/vented box or bandpass box make a big difference in how hard the subs hit, or is it more about being the "right" box, regardless of type? Because it seems like other cheaper, less powerful entry level systems I've been around(mainstream sonys, pioneers, kenwoods from the local superstore) can be heard from much farther away. Mine hit plenty hard in car and when in a driveway can be heard from inside houses, yet standing 10 ft. away from the car or sitting next to the vehicle at a light the bass is barely noticeable. I appreciate all the help I've received on this board as it has made my system possible, and I apologize for the long post.

Oh yeah...i'm looking for a boom car, which I belive is SPL? After reading the FAQ, some of the other posts and such, it looks like a ported box would probably be better for my subs? Does anyone how much of an effect this would have, switching from a sealed to ported with the kickers? **edit** my gains are turned to almost zero, and my boost is at about half.**

I'm no expert either but I know that a ported box is the path you must take for SPL. I don't know anything about dimensions, but I can imagine a ported box built to specs would definitiley improve the boom.

Wiring the subs at an ohm load the amp isn't stable at.
Amp isn't getting the proper air flowage....
And will a ported/vented box or bandpass box make a big difference in how hard the subs hit
Yes, a ported box built to the specs of the subs will be twice as loud and should sustain some sq...hence the made up term of 'SQL"

Mine hit plenty hard in car and when in a driveway can be heard from inside houses, yet standing 10 ft. away from the car or sitting next to the vehicle at a light the bass is barely noticeable
And should be kept that way...you should be lucky that you can hear what you bought all in your car, thats what you bought if for, so you can listen to it, not others. I wish all my bass stayed only in my car...my fellow citizens would probably be much happier....

But I look at it this way, if they can smoke a cig next to me, and I have to inhale that smoke....then they can with stand a beating of ear piercing bass in their ear drums....hey it's only fair.

If your subs are dual voice coil and wired in parallel to the amp then you have a 1 ohm load and if you remember our previous converstation, the Kicker is a 2 ohm stable amp... so that's why it goes into protect.

And I wouldn't say that you're looking for SPL either, as SPL stands for Sound Pressure Level (which basically means that you want to keep that pressure in the car)... You had it right by refering to it as a "Boom Car" if you want to be heard blocks away, but you may wanna rethink that... you may wanna impress people, but I'm sure you don't want the tickets that may go along with it... and after all, you bought the system for you to listen to... not the house a block over.

and for your enclosure... As Matt stated: "Yes, a ported box built to the specs of the subs will be twice as loud and should sustain some sq...hence the made up term of SQL"

Cargodz, the truth is ALOT of people do buy sytems(a least it seems like this) strictly for other people to listen to. I live in the South, and alot of the people I see with systems just want a show off system, like the guys down my block, I get a kick out of them, 2 15's l7's, some big A%% fleamarket amp, but you should have seen the look on there faces when I came down there one day from my house(about 3 blocks away) just out of curiosity.. happier than hell, but guess what stock speakers with no amp. Now before I get my a$$ chewed out, this isn''t referring to anyone on here, just something I see alot.....

This is the only real reason I have a system, to shut the folks listen above down :) other then that, the volume I listen to my music at, is at a level where I can still talk on my celly...Not that I would drive and talk on a phone at the same time or anything.

Haha, all good points. Yeah, I actually am glad that I don't have to worry about tickets from area police officers(in my area they love tagging younger people) but I was just curious as to how I could turn it into a show car for parking lots and other areas that people like to show off at. I usually keep it down but when someone else goes bumping by me I like to bump back. **cargodz...I have them wired in series, so it should be delivering a 4 ohm load to the amp, correct? For the last week on my 10-15 min. drives they'd be fine, no protection, but yesterday I'd turn it on and in about the first 30 seconds it'd go into protection?! Basically I'm with H.Society, I just don't want to get beat by kids that run xplods and think sony is god so you have to shut them down :)

I got no problem with it if you wanna show off... just saying that SPL is to be kept in the car for the "P" in SPL= Pressure... You wanna have a Boom Car I got no problems (as long as you're not trying to boom country) :p lol

The problem you're having with having it wired at 4 ohms is that you're only feeding your subs a total of 375w rms for both @ 14.4volts (not each... 187.5wrms each) and that's at 1.5% THD so not real superb quality either.
With them being DVC 4ohm subs to get the most out of them, you'd need a 1 ohm stable amp.
