Best sub box position for hatchback car?

Hi,

I'm designing a system for my sister's b.f, he has a small (USA=tiny,hehe) hatchback car. In another of my posts, this was suggested...

"Also, if you've got a hatchback, your best is to go CRX Style ported (subs up, ports firing towards the rear)."

I will be building a ported box for a 12" RE SE sub. Is this a good suggestion made? If not, what would be an optimal sub box setup for mainly SPL (playing good quality, very loud, bass)??

I had a Festiva not unlike that red car

and I fired the subs toward the rear, ports firing upward, and it worked ideally.
You could also down-fire the subs to really get some hard hitting response from them in that car, though you may want to sound deaden the vehicle a bit, too.
Another option is to fire subs up with ports up as well.
It's entirely up to you but it's hard to know what works best till you try a few combinations.
You can always put ports in a side adjascent to the side with the subs (90 degrees offset) and flip the box to see which way works best.. subs back, ports up, or ports back, subs up..
you can even try subs down, if you raise the box up about 6" on some bricks or legs.

Would the thin (flimsy) standard parcel shelf be an issue? (in terms of restricting air flow, etc)? What clearance should I allow if I have sub-rear and ports-up or even the opposite way come to think of it!?!

as much as possible the ports would need an area to load off of so i would fire the ports into the hatch and fire the sub into the cab for spl or i would fire the ports into the hatch and the sub back. or you could fire the subs up and the ports into the cab... all these are used in world record holding spl hatch back cars
