I checked my 01 Dodge Dakota's doors and the actual hole in the metal of the door is 6".

Are the speakers I see advertised at 6.5" stating their mounting width or could they be stating a different dimesion on the speaker?

i put 6.5's in them all the time.....ok not all the time but when i do a dakota it gets them....

6.5" is a nominal rating - much like a 12" subwoofer that generally measures more like 12.25" or 12.5" from edge to edge, and mounts in a hole that's typically between 11" to 11.25".

Same goes for 6.5" speakers.

For door speakers, the measurement is diagonal across from one screw hole to the other right?

The Diamond D971s state a mounting width of 6.3. Im assumong they will fit based on the info above. Whats a good price to pay for these comps.
Thx for that info. I also note that the stock speakers have a factory plug. Does one buy an adapter to fit these plugs for new speakers or just clip the wires and add connectors?

I'm guessing you are running them amped, if so, I'd run new speaker wire altogether. If they are run off the hu, see what kind of factory connector it is. If it has something that you can slide spades into, then just make some short wires that connect to that. I wouldn't cut anything factory off, unless you plan on either keeping the system as is when and if you sell the car. It makes it much easier to put everything back in with everything still there.

Just like "4 ohms". How many speakers have a DC Re measurement that is actually "4 ohms"? I've never seen one... always 3.7 ohms, 3.8 ohms, etc.

Every speaker will have specs available for it however, showing the cutout diameter - that's one dimension (and screwhole dimensions are somewhat standard too - or at least, basket makers typically try to accomodate a bunch of "OEM fitment" hole patterns) that is somewhat standard.

But a 6" hole sounds about right for a 6.5" speaker... I haven't given it thought in so long (what is a factory speaker location again?

)...
