for the sub gurus

Soundstream says the subs I have shouldnt go in sealed boxes. Says extended use in a sealed box will eventually destroy the woofer.

Ryan looked up a manual for me:

If they aint supposed to go in sealed enclosures why is it listed as a box type.

And how/will, will it destroy the sub.

I know I posted about this last week but I just wonder how it will ultimatley affect the subs, and if it will I dont want to ruin a pair of good subs, and I will try something different.

could be the cone isnt strong enough for the back pressure and it will fold. or it could just sound like crap in a sealed enclosure elevation sqx's are like that

We need actual pictures of the sub/magnet to properly ID the sub.

Im not 100% convinced the manual I dug up is for certain your subs.

Well I was hoping to find an actual model number on it, somewhere.

There is 3 different SPLX lines Ive found.

The one you already told me for sure is not yours, which leaves the other two.

The only physical factor between both is the mounting depth. One is 7 1/8", the other 7 1/4"

Put a tape measure up to the sub on the counter and get an accurate depth. That should tell us which one it really is for certain (I hope).

Ryan I will vouch that the Soundstreams have pretty thick cones and could easily take the back pressure of a sealed box...

Having said that though... All of the manuals I've seen on these guys always recommend using a ported/vented box. Thanks to Bill and many members here, I made a killer ported 10" box for one of these, and although the Soundstream never went in there, the crappy little Audiobahn that did came alive like no joke...

I did however put the Soundstream in the Box for initial testing and plugged the port and Bill is right on the money there... Sounds like liquified poo compared to the open port.

what are the T/S specs of the sub?

model up a box and build a test box... measure response and see what you get, put some power to it and see how it acts...

I have a SS sub also, and it will work nicely in a sealed box. So your statement is a bit vague and doesnt cover all of soundstream.

The EBP on these subs might be siding with ported heavily. Probably the reason sealed isnt recommended at all.

I found two possible manual for Tim. One shows as the SS techs said, only ported. Another allows for either or. Its just a matter of getting the CORRECT model number of his sub and using the right manual then.

Usually on the sub theres a model number, somewhere.

Or we could stop trying to convince ourselves that its OK to use a sub that's not built or designed to run in a sealed enclosure sell it and get another one or get a ported box? I agree with falken, Build a test box see what happens that's the only real way to know.

all this blah blah blah about manuals ebp's and other dumb shit is a waste of time. if soundstream says no sealed box they have a reason quit trying to get around it.

You're right I was being a bit too general on this one.

But I've seen a few SS out there and their manuals seem to push people toward ported rather than sealed.
