help me design false floor/box

Post by lotas »

ok well i took some pics...for the sub box, I cant decide if I should do fiberglass or if theres some way I could use MDF. I just saw RE reccomends .8cu ft sealed for a 12" xxx! is it just me or is that pretty small? so yeah I probably only need one corner of this area(hard to get a depth perception from this pic, its about 10inches):

this piece covers the tire well, it will be hinged in the exact middle, 16" in, its a 32"x32"

so what I need help with is where to put the sub, and what to make the enclosure out of, and then where to put the amps. originally I was going to screw down a couple 2x4s and lay the sheet of MDF over those, and put the amps underneath, but after furthur examination of my trunk, the bottom is too uneven to do that..

my plan is to build an amp "shelf" sort of, maybe put it next to the sub if the sub is going in one of the "corners"

anyways sorry for all the writing, just toss any ideas out that you have, even if you just looked at the pictures

Are you able to pull the sub box though to the seat area? I think if you are able to pull it out the way enough for the hinges to work, and not have it sit on top the amp on the back of the seat, then I'd do that.

Have a piece of wood stick up for the box to rest against so it does not move backward.

So in effect, you will have the box back by the seat, and you just put down the seat and pull the box back until you are able to open the hatch area. You could either fiberglass the amp on the right side of the trunk, or right in front of the sub box on the movable panel... maybe.

Now you just need to 'glass some speakers and a tv into your trunk lid on the underside :)

the area behind it is where the sub box is going, its not built yet so I udnno what you mean by pulling it through Im not sure if I should do fiberglass or try MDF, its a 12" XXX, my dilemna, and where the designing needs to come in, is I have that area there, its like 32"x10"x13" (width x depth x height) and it needs to house a 12" XXX, a Kicker kx 1200.1, and a JL 300/4.

Im thinking I can fiberglass the left corner of that area for the sub, and then build a little cabinet with shelves( or amp rack) for the amps. Sort of like making a subwoofer box, and putting a shelf in it. Maybe making the front cover plexiglass.

and if re reccomends .8cu ft, i think i can use just that corner cause isnt that like 12"x12"x10"?

the reason I want to keep that stuff (sub and amps) way in the back, is because I think it would be a lot harder to steal way back there, you'd have to get inside the trunk, with a waffle iron on your left and a guitar amp on your right ;)

What I mean is using a box of MDF and having it be able to be pulled from the trunk into the interior of the car without having to do anything major (fit through that opening), that way you can just move the box back (after you put the seat down) and open the hatch part.

well but see if I use that little area in the back then I wouldnt need to pull anything through, because it will have a hinge that allows me enough room to pull the tire out. The only thing I am worried about is that area there is where the gas tank is, so I have no way of securing it down.

i guess I could super glue it down ;)

Why are you downsizing the box you already have?

the box I have now is like 12" high, and the very back of the trunk is only 11" or something. in a nutshell, the box cant be moved all the way back, so I lose about a foot of space.

with my old setup, I had the kicker behind the sub box, but the sub box was just way to close, thats how my sub surrond got damaged.

yeah thats what I was thinking, but why would RE reccomend that? i dunno. I was thinking of going for more like 1 - 1.5 at least. Its either a really funky-shaped MDF box, or fiberglass, and I dont want to glass it becuase its deep in the trunk and id have to lay in the trunk to glass it!

Manufacture reccomendations aren't always the best. My RE8 box was .9 cu ft after displacement. The reccomendation for the RE8 is .5 cu ft, so you're telling me the 12 xxx box only needs .3 more cu ft than the RE8..ha seems fishy.
