kappas are ok. the kappa perfects with the variable Q featurea re nice if you want to play with different enclosure types.
good subs all, but for the price range, there are others to consider too.

kappas are good for SQ, but not real high on the SPL scale. they're detailed and accurate, but the output is often considered a bit weak if you like bass heavy response as opposed to flat response or just bass fill in a smaller system

$107-109 at Etronics.com for the Type R's, but be sure of the shipping cost.

Ditto on the weak output but good SQ -first hand experience.

i just hooked up my Atlas 12 last night (http://www.ascendantaudio.com); it's getting 230 watts from my memphis amp and it makes my ears hurt. it is also a true variable Q sub. it's a 4 ohm sub with a second voice coil that is strictly used to adjust the Qts by either placing a wire jumper across the vc or leaving it open, etc. i ran some wire from that coil and installed a potentiometer in my console which allows me to adjust the Qts "on the fly." it's pretty sweet. more bass than i thought i would get with such few watts. SQ is great. for the wattage that a kappa will take, i would definitely recommend looking into an Atlas.

I dont mean to steal the thread, but with the atlas 12, if you were to wire more than one together, would you just wire it as a single 4 ohm voice coil sub since the second v.c. is just to adjust the Qts? Just curious.

That's correct. The Atlas is a 4-ohm, SVC sub.
