hate to break it to ya Mack, but 70+% of your audio comes from your front stage. It's the most important part of the audio system. subs are subs. substantial bass isn't all that hard to make, and people who blow tons of money on subs and enormous amounts of power on a daily driver, with cheap coaxials up front run by the ehad unit, have very skewed priorities compared to someone who spent $1500 on power AND good components for the front stage, but hey what do I know?
a head unit isn't that vital. hell, some people do good systems with a stock factory radio.
amplifiers are just that. transparent sources of power. a watt is a watt, and if the amp works, it's doing it's job. again, not something you could tell one brand from another without looking.
subs? heh ok. You can make nearly any sub sound from amazing to crap with the right box, or lack of it. This has been proven many, many times.. an S12L7 in an aperiodic box won SQ events, and cheap AB and Sony subs win SPL events, so while a better sub can make a difference, it's still not the most vital step of the system design.
Now your components.. install, angle, signal path, crossovers, and driver timbre. These are things you just can't fake. You buy right, and set it up right, and power it right, or EQ it to shape the response properly, or you get a system that sounds like a fart-harmonica. end of story.
While $500 isn't an unreasonable amount of money to drop on the front stage, and you can do fairly well for that much depending on the rest of the system.. telling someone that he's an idiot for spending $1700 on his front stage is just rude, and ignorant. Hey, I spent $12,00 on my front speakers, and the amp was another $1,250, and that's not including labor to fiberglass the speaker locations, the time to figure speaker positions and angles, 1/3 octave EQ tuning and RTA time, or the time and expense of hand built passive crossovers for the 3-way components. Am I even more "stupid" than Justin?
