NaughtyTegRoc wrote:Well guys- a friend of mine put in a set of JL's he had hanging around and they sound pretty dang good. However, I still need new speakers for the backseat and oddly they still sound pretty good but I know they are stock. Can you get good bass from component speakers (what's in there actually thumps fairly decent) or should I just leave those as is and go for the sub and amp now?
components will give you okay bass, but nothing like a subwoofer. If you want good midbass up front you could put in like an 8" driver, that would provide good bass. Keep in mind components aren't designed/dedicated to play much bass, or frequencies under 80hz or so.

If whats in there is good enough for you now, Id just stick with it and go for like a single 10" or 12" setup and a smaller 600watt amp or so.

by the way, just thought of something about components. If you go for something like the CL61's, you will only need a 75wRMS 2channel amp. With something like EF's or HD's you will need over 150watts to each speaker. That will be more $ to spend, and if you dont have that extra money to spend you might be sacrificing SQ, by having to move to a cheaper brand.

just something to keep in mind. I used CDT's lines as an example, but it might apply to DD, JL, or whatever you were looking at.

Robin, I really suggest you add a sub and an amp in the rear and you can leave stock rear fill alone if they sound fine to you now. A good component set will do just fine up front for most people. I'd suggest going with a 6.5 comp set as they'll generally provide more midbass than 6.5" coaxials and smaller comp sets like 5 1/4". For comps look into Infinity, CDT, RE, JL (although costly) and even Polk makes some decent sets. If it were me I'd go with the RE comps since they're a very reputable name right now and can be had for around $150 I believe. Infinities speakers get loud, but seem to lack midbass in nearly every setup i've heard using them. If that's something that's a concern, I would look into somethin else. I haven't heard the Kappa Perfects, but I would assume they're probably in the same boat as the rest of their speakers as far as midbass goes. For a sub choice a single RE12 would be a great choice for a low power install and would add some bump in the rear. That sub can be had for around $75 shipped and it's a hard woof to beat for the price really. I ran a single RE8 ported for a while and got as loud as some dual 10 setups i've heard, so if you're lookin for some extra output I'd suggest going ported and feeding the 12" it 150-200w rms. That's just one idea. There are tons of other options. Check out the "bang for the buck sub" thread on this site.

yeah I'd go the sub route even if it's just a small sub and amp or even a self-amplified sub for low end fill. Don't try to get bass from components. they'll bottom out and distort. give the fronts good power and the sub good power and the system will sound clean at most any reasonable volume.
as for rear speakers, personally I don't think they're needed many times, but if you want to use rears, look at 6.5" midranges or coaxials instead of components.
you won't want the rears to be overly bright of they'll destroy a good soundstage by pulling too much of the volume to the rear and ruining the stereo separation causing a floating effect between right rear and left front.

Are there any more changes to the list? There are still several brands left out, but I'd like to make this an addition to the FAQs if everyone is happy with it so far.

Ok, it has been finalized (kind of :) ). Each category is sorted alphabetically (that took some time out of my life...)

Just awaiting Basstronics (PM'ed it to him) to add in reply form to The Good, Bad, and Ugly list.
