An unsual install problem

Hey guys,

Ok here's whats going on. My friend is installing an aftermarket headunit in a guys vehicle. He's wired up the connectors and plugged the connectors in. He turns on the headunit and everything works but there is no sound. We figured the headunit may be defective. This is not the case. We hooked up the headunit to a power supply and connected it to one speaker. It works. The other funny thing is when we connect the factory radio back into the guys vehicle, the speakers work. We even connected the head unit back up, unconnected the wires that go to the speaker harness and plugged in the speaker that we used to test in the shop and it works. But if we connect the speaker wire harness back into the factory wire harness no sound comes out but everything else works on the headunit. Its been a real frustrating night last night.

The vehicle is a 1996 Jeep cherokee.

Anyone got any ideas.

use the remote turn on to the adapter harness

I should have been more specific. What I meant was his factory midrange speakers.

What Ryan is saying is that there is a factory amp that you will either need to hook the remote turn on wire to or bypass entirely.

You will probably be best off just bypassing it.

In jeeps, the amp is under the rear seats.

SO everything is working except a set of midrange speakers?

My guess is going to be your stock system has more than 4 speaker leads going into the factory amplifier. Your new radio only has 4 speaker leads...

I believe that some of the 88-96 have 4) 5.25" for the front off a factory amp and then one more set in back, so you'll have to do as recommended above.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the install tip. Everything works great. We also got a chance to interface the steering wheel controls to the headunit so now our customer can still use the controls to control the headunit. Uber cool!
