sub idea for rear deck of car

Post by Robert Wollenberg »

My friend has a 97 Ford Crown Vic. He's not looking for a huge system. I'm pushing him toward a simple two way componenet set in the front, and small subs in the rear deck. I haven't looked to close to his car yet to see what will fit where. We should be doing that in the weeks to come. I'm guessing 8 inch subs massaged into the 6x9 holes, or whatever is back there. We might go for a 10" on one side if there's room. Anyway, in an infinate baffle setup, speculating on an 8", what sort of suggestions would you guys have for a driver to work well in that situation?

none.

I hated that setup in the Monte I had. 2 10's in a sealed box.

Maybe it was the subs... But it just sucked...

for IB to work well, you need to totally seal off the trunk, then reinforce the package shelf with a piece of 3/4" MDF to absorb the weight and vibrations from the subs.
otherwise, don't even bother trying.

That was my plan, MDF and fiberglass. Expanding foam where ever needed. When it's done, the back shelf should look nearly stock. If I don't F it up somehow.

Why is it so difficult to find T/S parameters on car audio equipment? IB drivers need to have a high Qts and a low Fs. I found some Morel and Dayton subs that arn't too bad. This is why I'm turned off by most car audio gear. I guess I look at it as, they must have something to hide.

Dayton makes IB specific drivers, if you take a look at PE.

Another alternative would be just to build a nice box for the trunk and then port up through the existing rear deck speaker holes to bring it into the cabin.

yeah, I thinking that too. He's got the trunk room for it. I'm not sure if he's ready to do a sub yet or not. He just got back from Kosovo, got married, and had a kid on the way. lol. It's the Air Force way ... get your girl pregnant, run off to a foreign county, find out she's pregnant, marry her when you get back. It happens all the time. lol. He is ready to do the front speakers though. He's got a so-so HU that will sufice and an older zapco amp about 50x2. I was leaning toward Dayton RS mids, which ever will fit best, and LPG tweets with Dayton crossovers.

What crossover point are they?

I think the RS150s would work, but I'd personally recommend a set of Seas coated paper or poly or Peerless Exclusives. For a 2-way, they're going to work better.

Well, Dayton has two way crossovers at 2k, 2.5k and 3k I think. I belive the LPGs power rating is based on 12db slope at 2.5k, so that's the crossover I was going to get.

He listens to a lot of rap type stuff, so sound quality is not really a factor. I automatically graivated toward the Daytons to keep the price of the system low. I don't know how much more he's willing to spend, but I'll see what I can talk him into. I really like the Seas and Peerless drivers. But off the top of my head, they cost at least twice as much.

Yep they are 2x more expensive. Where did you find info that the LPGs can cross that low? I can't seem to.
