Well...first of all, welcome to the forums.
Secondly, stay away from Sony Xplod! Its crap. As for kenwood, they are at best ok, but there is a lot more stuff out there that is better and probably cheaper.
Does the 800 include upgrading interior speakers as well, or just sub and amp?
Are you looking for an SQ, SQL, or SPL set up?

800 for just sub and amp, you can get yourself a pretty decent set up.
I might look into subs such as Adire Audio Shiva's http://www.adireaudio.com
Or Ascendant Audio Atlas http://www.ascendantaudio.com
Or could look into Resonant Engineering SE or SX, prolly one SX would do
http://www.reaudio.com
As for an amp, a kicker 600.1 or a jl audio 500.1
both can be found on http://www.woofersetc.com
edit: and dont forget an amp wiring kit, somewhere between 20 and 50 bux...depending on what u get. http://www.knuconceptz.com i think has a 4 ga kit for like 20 bux
Hope this helps a little.

you might want to check out the sticky at the top of the forum , the "bang for your buck subs" though with $800 you might be able to get something a little better.
If you go the RE route, and you are lookin for SQ, I'd go for a pair of RE's or SE's, but if you are going for SPL, go for a SX.
By the way, not sure if you know, but to clarify..
SQ- Sound Quality
SPL - Sound Pressure Level (loudness basically)
SQL - Mix of the two
You could also look into the Kicker Comp subs, I think those can be had for pretty cheap. Also check out http://www.soundsplinter.com the rl-i or p(?) series subs are good for the money. And depending on what size you want, like Tedd mentioned, you could get an Atlas or maybe even an Avalanche depending on what you wanted (from http://www.ascendantaudio.com)
As far as an amp goes, I would reccomend Kicker from personally experience. I would also reccomend if you go the Kicker route, to do a pricematch from Cardomain.com with etronics.com or another site that carries kickers at low prices. (cardomain will not only match it, but they will beat it by a small amount, and they have great customer service and are authorized dealers! I got a Kicker Kx 1200.1 for $438 from them and their regular price for it is $799!)
Good luck
edit: you might want to leave $50 or so for a box if you plan on making one. 3/4" MDF at Home Depot is like $25-30 and you will probably want some liquid nails, clear silicone, a caulk gun (if you dont already have one), some wood screws, and you will want somehow get a jigsaw, but box building is down the road a ways, but just a heads up!

Mith, I've seen sony P5 subs win SPL events in smaller competitions, when the people were in teh novice classes. The problem with Sony is two-fold. The SQ isn't that good, largely in part to teh non-round subs and we've discussed the problem with that before, dealing with solobarics. The other issue is their build qualty and reliability. Their products just have a very high failure rate. If you get lucky and get a product that holds up, then the only thing to consider is if your ears are happy with what the sony stuff offers. personally I find the head units to have poor output signal quality, the amps fail half the time, and the speakers are very lowbrow design, like stuff you'd see at flea market sales.
$800 bucks.. good suggestions for subs already given. amplifiers, JL is a bit on the steep side. look at cadence, eD, kicker, MTX, or JBL. they'd all give you plenty of performance for the money. Even something like current production Orion or PPI amps on ebay would be an economic choice for good mid-level performance.
after that, you could use any money saved to buy good front speakers since they will be handling 70% of the audio spectrum you listen to. the front stage is vital to a good sounding system, which leads to considering a 4 channel amp for front/rear speakers.
after that, you'll want to give thought to a new head unit that has features you desire, and if possible, 4V preouts with 3 sets of RCA connections for F/R/S amps.
that'd be all ya need, although I'd start saving for an alarm as well. I hate to see people spend money on a good system then have it stolen because tehy skimped on getting a security system to run off thieves.
