Need a new CPU fan

Post by Chris from Washington »

My CPU fan is going out, so need to get a new one.

I would like to get a quiet one, anyone have any suggestions?

It currently has a cooler master on it, but the bearings or something must be going out, and it's so loud. It's driving me nuts!

hmmmm I like the new sinks with pipes hooking all the primary heat sources together and then you concetrate on bringing in air, and exhausting air. There was one on toms hardware that was rated high. I know, not much help. Coolermaster, and thermaltake always did well by me. Check tomshardware.com for reviews

you probably know this but turn your PC off as much as possible until you replace it to avoid frying the processor. trust me, thats not fun.

literally you can remove both sides of your pc's enclosure if you wanted to. it wouldnt fix the fan but it would allow for more air to pass through, which should in turn decrease the fans usage!

I bought an HSF combo. Huge one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835118019
Works great, isn't loud (I came from this ridiculous fan, so nothing's loud now :) ). I can touch the fins with my hand because they don't get over 75 deg. Fahrenheit, according to my BIOS temp.

Can you buy just the fan? Or do you have to buy all new heatsinks too? Seems like everywhere I look, has the whole package.

if you want to keep the sink and replace the fan, go to newegg.com and find the size you need in a case fan that has thermally controlled speed.
that way when ou don't need a noisy, fast fan, it throttles down to a slower speed.
I use one on my CPU and it runs at about 800rpm uner normal use.

Most fans have their loudness rating on them, don't forget to look at that. The quietest that I've seen are 20dB ones.

My brother used to have this one that literally sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
