Do NOT join. Your signing a contract that basically controls your life. Although the national guard isn't very dangerous, they still practically own your body. They tell you where you can and can't go, an Armed Forces service basically takes away your rights while your under contract... I personally don't like the idea that on any given day I couldn't just quit, my ass is on contract. So if I get to boot camp and say "Hey, this isn't for me". Nope, they got you for four years of your life. Once you sign at MEPS... your on contract for four years, you can get out of it but it's very difficult. I have been to MEPS, I took the ASVAB and the full physical. I scored an 83 on the ASFAB for Active Duty Marines. I, however, failed the physical with a punctured left ear drum ( had surgeries on left ear all my lfie, troubling little bugger ). I had to have it surgically repaired if I was to join, however I haven't even looked into surgery. It was the luckiest unfortunate thing to happen to me in my life. I strongly advise you to reconsider, I am 100% for the U.S.A. and fully support the services but when they send your ass packing there's going to be life or death situations and if you don't fully support the movement... (I.E. I oppose the entire Iraq situation) it's not gonna be a very fun four years. I have around 10 friends who are currently in Florida / boot camp / or Iraq. All marines, a few infantry, a few repairing jet engines and automechanic work.
The main reason I didn't want to join was money, they bullshit you sooo much, when you get out of the Marines or in your case the National Guard, you got that little bit of money you made and no trade skill, no education, no job, no more money. It's a little trap the Armed Forces has created so that you don't ahve much choice but to re-enlist. Just my two cents, I don't mean to persuade but I hope you read and understood everything I had to say. Ultimately it's your decision, just know that once you sign at MEPS, your property of the USA and the concept of being almost like an item is flat out wrong to me.

I apologize if I came off Anti-American or Anti-Military it's just that my experiences with the Marines has traumatized me in some ways. I was put in a very pressuring situation. My recruiters never informed me that I was going to be swearing in when I visited MEPS, I was suppossed to be testing... and nothing more. However, I was signed up to swear in and I don't know what would have happened if I had to visit the Ceremonial room. I'm Pro America and Pro Military and Pro Freedom. I think military and freedom contradict each other and that's where my dilemma is today.

Hmmm? you support america, but not the military. If it wasn't for the military would there be an america?

Bet you would feel that way if you were one of the THOUSAND of people he killed or tortured. Or maybe one of the kurds he atacked with VX gas.

Sounds to me like you didn't look for the right job. Sure a grunt on the ground with a gun doesn't have many job options. But what about the guys that work on planes, vehicals, or copters. Hell I had a friend just finish his 6 year enlitment and went to work for lockhead making 80k a year starting out.

Not completly true. You have till you step on the bus on your way to basic to back out.

Ok now I have to ask. Why the marines? It sounds to me like you wanted the military to be more like a regular job. So why didn't you look into the navy, or airforce.

Jeremy, as much as your trying to talk me into the Air Force for some odd reason I can't seem to make that "ok, its obvious air force is for smarter people leap". As bad as this sounds Nat. Guards website is a lot easier to thumb through and obtain information. I was trying to find the MOS for the Air Force and mainly the intelligence side of things. See problem is I am not certain I want to continue wenching as a career. I'm thinking of switching things up a little bit (why I think the military any branch, would be good for me, I can reboot so to speak).

I dunno man, I'm really digging some of the intelligence jobs. I'd love to be a CIA,FBI,NSA agent one day..I'll wear a suit and the whole nine yards. May even change my name to Mulder lol

I wanted to join the army but because of my criminal charges i couldn't, however the marines would accept me. Didn't even look into the airforce... if i can't get in to the army won't get in to the airforce. The navy never really interested me.

I didn't mean to sound so anti-military, I just want the people who are thinking about it to realize that from Day 1 of boot camp, you've got 4 more years and there's no getting around that. Some people are ok with that and make it work for them and benefit from the experience, however, I'm not one of those people. I wouldn't enlist in Active Duty if given the chance. I still think about the reserves however.

And this is directly to jeremy, i understand that saddam hussein had to be removed from power, however, we shouldn't be as concerned about other nations when our in is in just as much trouble. Take a closer look at the attacks on 9/11.

Please do not turn this into a political debate thread.
I don't mean that rudely just would prefer this thread to stay about the National Guard/Military and not politics.

I've been watching all the video's and the physical/mental stuff didn't really get to me not even the gas chamber, but what did was firing live rounds.
IE : Live Grenades and Live Firearms. Did anyone else feel this trepidation when it came to these items? If so, how did you overcome it?

In the national guard you won't face many serious situations, I think your safe to join the National Guard if that's what your asking. My posts are directed more towards marines who are pracically frontliners for the Iraqi guerilla soldiers. Hussein is dead I don't know why we're over there, all I'm saying.

The only things I shot were a 9mm, and a M16, so I wasn't worried about it.

Honestly the training has to be Army proof, so I wouldn't worry. They go step by step on what to do, well before you get out on the range. Even then everything is so controled, it would be hard to goof something up.

OK, thank god, I mean I can shoot a rifle and what not I'm worried about running to my next "safe point" while someone is covering me and getting shot in the butt or worse.

Jeremy, I'm still debating on Air Force but I've been really favoring this military intelligence program based on the fact of civilian jobs when I get done. Afterall the only reason I am doing this is for money. Sorry for all you patriots but I mean if it wasn't for the cash, I wouldn't do it probally. I don't know since I've became somewhat of a family man my priorities in life have changed drastically.
