the car speaker that started it all
Oh yea, and then came the MM Godfathers...I think that was them
with the polypropeline cone...oh boy..had to have them.
I also had a Pyle driver 15
My first real system was
Alpine HU
2 RF Punch 45's
1 Power 300
Ran the Power 300 to a pair of Altec Lansing 5.25 components and the Punch 45's powered a pair of Stillwater Designs Gold Lettering Kicker 15's.
Had 4 Kicker 15's in a wall in my 85 T/A..this was about 1988

Jensen 6x9's were a staple. Even my Dad got them for an "upgraded" speakers when he bought a new 1979 Buick Electra back then.
For me, my first initial experience stared with a yearning for Cerwin Vega 6x9's. I was basically first educated by a CA audio dealer a called "Audio Vision" (where home audio came first), with this knowledgeable mobile installer/ manager, who taught me about the less-is-more approach and the philosophy of using a staggered electronic crossover frequency/slopes to achieve good sound w/o sound-degrading EQ's, or how less links in the signal chain. The guy, Rick Parker, probably taught me more about car audio than anyone else. He later owned his own high-end car audio store, in which this no-pressure environment existed where you could come into just to listen, get valuable advice and even try out equipment in your own car on a demonstrator basis.
These were the times when many car audio stores typically just wanted to sell you anything, instead of teaching you something.
In fact, this approach is still the norm. Recently, I went into Best Buy's "upscale" Magnolia home theater/mobile audio section to ask for some S/PDIF digital cable. The clerk was clueless and didn't even know what it is---probably the most widely used digital transmission cable.
What I don't like about car audio is dealing with peole like that, their snobbery and attitude.

My first system was a sweet Jensen tape deck with an aux input on the front (the display even said CD when you plugged something in) and a pair of Pioneer 6x9s rattling around in the back dash of my 89 VW Fox.... all thanks to the car's previous owner! A little cutting and hammering of the metal back there to make them fit and some screws and I was in business! Oh how I miss that car!
A lot of people used R/F Punch 45's back in the mid '80's. They strapped so many speakers to them, it just got crazy.OnYrMrk wrote:Oh yea, and then came the MM Godfathers...I think that was them

Somewhat like the Orion HCCA amps.
I had a coupl of R/F Punch 150's and a Power 1000 back then. They were okay--providing plenty of power, but the SQ just wan't as good as the H/K 260's (60 watts X 2) that replaced them.
my first subs were nak SP-80 8" carbon-fiber-impreganated into polypropylene (best of both worlds). In a IASCA competitiononce, I got 9/10 for sub bass clarity.
I see these and their bigger 1010 10" bigger brother on ebay all the time, and highly recommend them.
They don't perform too well in sealed or ports enclosures. But with their stiff, low-compliance properites, they're ideal for free-air or AP intsall's

My experience was a bit different... The speakers that started it all for me weren't even mine... My cuz has a 1979 Chevy Elcamino Bannana Yellow. and he had 2 10" Rockford Fosgate Punch Powers (The good ones before they became crap/ crappier) Had a 300 watt RF Amp on each of them and a Pioneer deck... Man that brings me back... Plus he had a matching interior of Corbeau racing seats, 5 point harness's, B&M Slap shifter and a Gaylords Fiberglass Tonneau cover...
My first sub was the first Audiobahn 10" High Excursion... I still have it actually...
