someone help

Post by Darthness »

Okay so recently we decided that we were giong to format the hard drive.. reinstall XP and the works. at the same time, i decided that i would also add it my spare 80gig hard drive as a secondary drive for user files. (and using the 60gig drive that was originally in there for winders/programs). Anyway, let me say this first: We've previously had a very minor problem with when the screensaver comes on and stays on, the light on the monitor would blink as if it was not receiving a signal or something. it also would occasionally do that on restarts.

Anyway, now we're having that same problem, but its much worse now. For a while,, we weren't even able to boot up period... we finally got windows isntalled, it took a few hours to get there but it happened. Anyway, when i rebooted after installing a few drivers, i plugged up the 80gig hard drive again (obviously i turned the PC off). When i turned it back on, nothing, its hungup booting again. So i turn it off, uplug the 80gig and the floppy drive (it doesn't work properly//we don't need it). I give it a few mintues and turn the PC back on.. nothing... so i try varios combinations of whats plugged in and whats not, with no success. right now i've got it off, i figured i'll give it a few minutes.

sorry this is kind of long, any suggestions?
Thigns we've probably ruled out: Heat, and hardware issues.
why? in between unsucessful bootups and installs, we decided to let it sit in BIOS config for a while to monitor the temperature.. it never got higher than 48*C, i'm pretty sure thats not bad. Another reason is, we can be in the bios config as long as we want, so that tells us something, i think.

Have you updated your BIOS? 48 is probably your idle temperature. You should measure the temperature with a probe or something while it's running to see what it gets up to. Also, find out what temperature range your cpu is capable of running at.

Okay, this issue may not be fixed but we are now in windows, evrythings fine right now. both drives work. although i have one big problem:

On the 80gig drive,, it has windows installed. and i have files over there that i need, but unfortunently, i do not know how to get those files off that drive because when i double click on the folder they're in on that drive, i get access denied/ wtf? i can access the rest of the harddrive though

I'm not sure on your original problem...
And I'm not sure about this problem either, but I'd suspect that it's the difference between FAT and NTFS. Do you recall how you originally formatted that hard drive? Do you recall now you formatted that hard drive currently?

It really sounds like that is the problem, even though I had thought that XP can "read" both file structures.

On the other hand, it wasn't really clear whether the files you can't access are on a different partition of that hard drive, or whether everything on that hard drive is on the same partition - if it's all one partition, then it's not the file structure for sure.

i belive both hardd drives are NTFS

its 2 seperate hard drives - i belive the problem is that the files i'm trying to access are being denied because there is a password on the account associated with the files... let me explain a little..

I pulled this hard drive out of an older computer with XP installed - i had a password on my account on that computer. I put that harddrive in this other computer to transfer the fiels over, and then i plan on formating it and using it.. but the problem is i'm getting "access denied" when i try and access the files i need on the hard drive... i think thats a little clearer..the rest of that hard drive is accessable

Interesting, but unless you were pretty sophisticated with how you had set up those "NT" user accounts on your machine there, there should be nothing prohibiting you from accessing those files - are they in a shared folder assocated explicitly with that particular NT user? That's the only way I could see them being denied.

While I sure don't know the answer, if it is related to the NT user like you say, I'd be willing to bet my left testicle that there's some hacker tool out there that could scan your file structure, and identify both the NT user name and password that you need to use to access those files... and it may be as simple as setting up an account with that same user name on your new machine and trying to get to them again - password may not even be an issue. Have you tried that?

I did not read all of this thread but I got the jist of it right off of the bat...Try checking the little battery on the board...That battery is like a memory for you pc.It tells pc what stuff to start first so it can boot....If you have noticed that the time was running off then this is why....If not this check to make sure the pin settings are correct on the harddrives...One has to be set on secondary and one has to be set on master....Also if I got the point right you are trying to put to 2 windows programs on seperate hard drives which will not work...I hope this info has help you out....Ohhh yeah and check the pins on the ends of the monitor cabales.....If one is crocked the try to straighten it out....This would cause the problem with the screen being viewable

its got nothign to do with the monitor - the computer doesn't boot. i could unplug the monitor on a system taht i know works and it'll still boot.

anyway, i'm not tryign to isntall windows on 2 seperate hard drives.. i ahve windows installed on one, and i have windows installed on a another hard drive that i pulled from another comp, and i need to get some files off that 2nd one so i can erase it and keep it.
