Critique this build?

Post by fuki-slam »

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster (sorta) here. I used to lurk here back when the boards were hosted at EZ Boards. I see a lot of familiar names. Does Kiki the Cat still post here?
Anyway, back on topic. In the following month I'll be coming across some funds that I'm thinking of using to upgrade my sound system. Here's what I have in mind..
CDT Audio CL-61a Components
JBL GTO75.4 4 channel, 520 watt amp
MB Quart RWE-252 10" 600watt Reference Subwoofer
Pioneer Premier DEH-480MP Headunit
My main goal here is sound quality. Thoughts? Suggestions? Criticisms? Is there anything in there that I can replace thats cheaper but just as good? I'm trying to keep my budget under 600 and right now I'm pretty sure I can get all of the above for that much shipped.
Also, I know this is kind of a noob question but would I need a capacitor? This is all going in to a 2003 Toyota Tacoma extended cab that I'm pretty sure has a 90A stock atlernator.
Anyway, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

The 4 channel amp will not power the sub also.
What would be better is a get a cheap 2 channel amp and power the components with that and get a cheap class d monoamp to power the sub.

I am not sure about the sub but I know the CDT components come with great reviews from those who have used them.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6306.html -HU for 119.99 w/ free installation package.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6723.html Orion 2channel 69.99
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_1584.html PhoenixGold 2ch 69.99

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4337.html DEI Class D mono 119.99

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4045.html -10" Alpine Type-R 109.99

There are a ton other 10" subs that are cheaper you can look at
Eclipse http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7493.html 89.99
Polk Momo http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7098.html 89.99
Phoenix Gold http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7289.html 89.99
MA http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4084.html 99.99

All of these are dual 4ohm which can be wired to a 2ohm load which the DEI amp will give max. power

As far as needing a cap, you may not need one I'd recomend doing a search of the "big 3" and doing that upgrade to your car. Do the big 3 and upgrade your battery and you should be fine.

CDT:130
HU :120
2Ch : 70
DEI : 120
Sub : 100

Total without S&H : 540 so 60 dollars for S&H and you'll have to build your own box and pay for misc. wiring and amp kit. So you could get away with 700 dollars total for a complete system. Not too bad.

He could power the sub fine with the rear channels bridged to it. Then use the front channels for the comps. But anyways, all in all, what you chose looks pretty good. And kiki still posts here, his name is now glasswolf.

Running the comps off the front channels, and bridging the other two to power a sub like this often offers the perfect balance of power.

And if more output is desired... how do you do it? You wouldn't do it by brute-forcing it with power - that's a very inefficient way to try to get loud, since the relationship between power and loudness is so poor - it takes nearly a 5x increase in power to simply cause a 2x increase in output... which means a 2x increase in power wouldn't gain you 3dB.
With this much power from the rear channels, a slightly larger enclosure, or slightly higher tune could turn the thing into a boom-machine even. :D

Since you mention the JBL amp (the GTO is nothing special - I think you could find better for the same buck, although there wouldn't be anything wrong with that amp) - why not check out the JBL GTi components? The GTo comps are nothing special, but the GTi's are one of my all-time favorites - DDD technology and all.
Do you have a budget?

Thanks for the replies thus far. Appreciate it. I guess I should have mentioned that at first I was going to do a two amp setup, but in order to keep things simple (and clean) I'm going with a 4-channel amp and bridging two of the channels to power the sub.

I'd like to keep things under or around $600 since I'll most likely need extra cash for other miscellaneous stuff like wiring, box materials, and installation. I would be interested to know what other, better amps are out there that are priced around the same, though. I only went with the GTO because it seemed to give the most power for the type of setup I was going for(and because it was listed as a good brand on 'the list'). Also, I should mention that I'll be buying it off of SoundDomain.. they have theirs listed at like 190 or so.

Anyway, thanks again for all the feedback guys. Appreciate it.
