advize me!!

Post by sonproductionz »

ok so i havent had the time to build a box in like the longest time and i finaly got around to doing it.....anyhow my question is how much of a difference do you think this will make......i started off first with a non ported box with 2 rockford fosgate t112's...then i went to a circle ported box (port = 3"dx12L) same 12's bass got a lot lower...but my friend tells me these subs are suppose to be some bangers and that i should put them in an L ported box so finaly today i went a got all my materials and got to buildin this L ported box....here is a goofy drawing of the box now .. i guess i was just wondering if this will hit harder....i havent completed it yet and its open now so any suggestions would be apreciated...thanx in advance

Well, first off.... there is no L-shaped "type" port. Ports end up being L-shaped because port length needs to be long to get desired port frequency. That type of port is called a slot port by the way. The next thing is that 1 3" port is no where near enough for those 2 12's. They should each have atleast a 4" port if not 2 3" ports. When you are doing ports, they have to be a certain lenth... you cant just cut a few ports at 10" and call it a day. My advice is to download Winisd (it is a free box buidling program) and mess around with it. If you have room in the box you have now, you could add a port(s) and make them the length Winisd says. This will actually help these subs get louder because right now, they are probably being restricted with that 3" port. Also... in most cases, there will not be any loudness difference between a slot port or a aero(circle) port.... if the port area is the same.

You can also easily unload your subs by playing material under the tuning frequency. Ported boxes require a high-pass filter.

thanx for the advice fellas...im rather new to this and trying to get my car to shake isnt easy as i thought it was going to be....but i already did away with the "round" ports..i will post pics of the box today...its just about done....i used to have a kicker 15 and an mtx 15 in a sealed box and it pounded in my explorer....but when i got rid of the box and tried to make another it was the first time i needed a ported box,so i had no idea what i was doing....sorry if im "lost" when it comes to this stuff like "L port"... i have no idea what im doing thats why i came here..i built 3 boxes in the last 2 months and it was all cause of port size....so i dont know the name of the port but i do know its a lot longer than it was..and i also know with every box i've made the subs have gotten a little louder....but i know nothing about tuning,hertz,etc...so please dont laugh at me..help me!

You got help. Swimmerdude recommended you model your sub in WinISD to get an idea of the volume and port length required for tuning.

Yea... Winisd is very helpful for planning out ported boxes.

And dont worry about not knowing anything yet, everyone started there at one point or another.... and good thing you came here to learn!!

ok so i woke up this morning to find out i had the day off (could i have asked for more) anyhow at around 7:30 this morning i fired up the saw :) and sorry i didnt post any pics...due to no smoking in the house, when i went to the garage this morning and seen a "almost" built enclosure,i couldnt just walk away (not even to get the camera) man this is a quick addiction..i did have time to check out winisd but i couldnt find my subs on there and also i have no idea how to read that..very new to this...anyhow i got ahold of somebody who owned the same subs and,so i built my box from his box.
anyhow i got the box all finished (carpetless due to carpeting it into my trunk) so its finished but not realy....but it does pound way harder than any other box i had in there.. but i ripped my trunk rubber putting it in there :(

i just wanted to say thanx for the responses and im glad to be joining the forums here

FYI... in the FAQ section there is a thread on Winisd...
http://www.caraudiocentral.net/forums/s ... d.php?t=44

and read some of the other threads in the FAQ section, they will be very helpful with starting off your learning.
