I have been thinkin about what would be the best for him overall, and I came to the conclusion that he should get:
2-RE XXX 12" subs ($430 ea.)
2-ARC Audio 1500 XXK Amps ($650 ea.)
1-ARC Audio 2050 XXK Amp ($250)
1-Alpine HU, I am thinkin' CDA-9830 or CDA-9833 ($300 or less)
1-Set of CDT 6.5 Component set ($150 set)
$2860 total, big chunk of change, but if he will swallow it, he can bump a ton, am I right??

in ported enclosures the two RE XXX subs will get as loud as he'll ever need in a hatchback for a driver.. unless he wants to compete seriously in SPL events and forget SQ entirely. Keep in mind though, a CVR needs ~300wRMS each. a XXX needs at least 1Kw each.
The 12" XXX has 32mm Xmax. I'm not sure on the newer CVR, I haven't looked to see if it's changed.

It really does depend on what he's after though. I use two RE XXX subs and I like them quite a bit.

hey kiki, do you think that I should try to get him to get some of "The Beast" amps liek you have, like off of ebay, or should he go with like orion or arc audio amps....also, will around 1000watts do the deed for the power needed to really make them bump, or will more juice be needed?
also, what size ports does he need? I could really use a shove in the right direction in that, since i know very, very little about ported boxes, all that port area and stuff really doesn't click with me, and the t-s parameters are greek to me, so those calcs dont really help...
would you go with two seperate enclosures and an amp rack in between or something like that, or go with one single box with dual ports and subs?
also, I believe that I saw somewhere that the ports should face upwards under the deck of the hatchback, and the subs themselves face backwards. am I mistaken, or does that sound about right?

I'm not sure if it will be of any help, but go to http://www.reaudio.com and load the highbandwidth version, the have encloser designs on there that will help you get started, i started with there specs and did a little modification and my RE's sound great.

for 12" subs you want at least 4" ID ports, or slot vents.
use whatever amps you like. I used mine because I like old Orion stuff and they are strong class AB amps.
Mine are delivering ~1280wRMS @ 14.4VDC at full output and do nicely. 1000 watts should do well. I wouldn't use any less though.

single or separate boxes, that's your call.
