Fiberglass

Post by solacedagony »

Ok guys, I've been researching fiberglassing lately and I think what I'm looking to do is make a mold, but I'm not quite exactly sure. What I've seen is that there are two methods for making something out of fiberglass.
1.) Make a base and use a fabric to make some pretty complex curves. Glass, and sand a whole bunch, then prime and paint.
2.) Make a mold of an already completed part (Probably for duplication).

I want to make doubles of my door handle trim so I can make a hole to mount my tweeters to in that area. Any direction would be awesome. Thanks!

i wouldnt make a mold for a few reasons. 1 takes more time and they suck. 2 there needs to be a left one and a right one so 2 molds 3. cost more and unless you are going to make quite a few of the exact same then its just something youll throw away in a few years.

can you post some pics of your door panels (or atleast tell us what kind of car it is)?

Theres a couple of ways of doing what you're talking about, one in particular involves the use of kitty hair and no fiberglass, which might be your best bet...

But yeah, either post up some pics or atleast tell us what kind of car you have....

EDIT: I agree with sinister, just pick up a set of used door handle bezels to build off of...

Ok, so it'd be in my best interests to just go to a junkyard and find a set of them?

Edit: Sorry about that, it's a 2003 Ford Ranger std. cab.

yeah, you could check out the classifieds over at

http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/

http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/

Both are good ranger forum in general, should probably take a peek around anyways...

But yeah, the kitty hair idea would probably be the easiest way for ya...

Heres a link for you to check out, it should give you a general idea on how its done...

Let us know if you need any more help...

EDIT: You're sure not going to have very much room there...

Not sail panels, flush mounting right onto the door handle trim.

Edit: I think you more or less answered my question by telling me to get another set of door handle trims and just cut the hole in that and put it in. But either way, I'm planning on fiberglassing an amp rack as well (once I decide which amps I want), and that'll be a huge project.

fo shizzle

I suggest you get some double sided tape and place the tweeters in various different locations before you get to far, you might find that you like them better in the a-pliar or........ :happy055:

Yea, I'm going to do that before I do anything, I've just been thinking (until I get someone to help me with it), where I could put the things and not have them way out in the way.
