give me a few pointers

Post by Darthness »

depending on my work schedule next week, i plan on starting my kickpanels!

I've basically got all my fiberglassing stuff already... i just need some paintbrushes and gloves.

I want to make sure i do this right...

Basic prep steps would include...

- Masking off the surface with a few layers of tape and alunimum foil, extending a few inches past where i want my kicks to go.
- put some sort of cloth (old towel, old sheet, etc) around other parts of the car just in case.

Next, mix a small batch of resin... this is where i start to get shady. I've read that you should dip the fiberglass into the resin and then put it in place and then use the brush to get rid of any air bubbles... and repeat. correct?

after the first layer is done, give it an hour or so and do a second. how many layers on the bottom? i was thinking about 3 or so?

After this is where i really start to become unsure... aiming the speakers. chances are i won't have anyone to help me with this, so i'll be on my own!

I read the FAQ about aiming.. but that says you sohuld have someone help. so thats kind of out. another site i'm on says to aim at either the side window, headrest, or dome light. so i'll probably go for one of those.

so once aimed.. stretch fleece over the pods and add resin, and then several layers of fiberglass to strenghen. after that you finish them with either carpet or paint... and wallah!

sound about right/ i really don't want to mess this up :P

Sounds about right. I've got the base mold for my doors done. I just masked off the area once with tape then sprayed it down with crisco. lol. Then glassed. Once the first layer dried ... over night cause Home Depot fiberglassing products aren't the best ... I roughed out with a sharpy where I would be cutting later. Then I put on a second layer of glass. I lay down some glass then put the mat on that and then some more resin on top to soak it good, then work out bubbles or lumps.

Since then, I've cut out the molds where I wanted them and am now in the process of cutting all the baffles, trim rings and what not to build up the panel. Hopefully I'll get through that tomorrow. I'd like to be glassing them before Saturday. I'll be busy again this weekend so we'll see.

Anyway ... those have been my steps.

I'm not one to post up other forums, but here's a forum that will help you out a lot. Nobody there seems overly chatty. I only go there for information and to look at others glassing works. I'm not a chatter there. I hope I'm not out of line for posting this ... http://www.glassmanscustomforum.com/index.html

It's all about fiberglassing.

Well, I'm putting my mids and tweet in the door. No kicks unfortunately. I love kicks too. But, My foot area is very small and I won't have anywhere to put my big ass foot if I build kicks. So anyway, My mids are going to shoot straight across the truck. Maybe I'll angle them up a little bit. Not sure yet. I might try to shoot the tweet closer to the domelight if possible. I figure I'm so far off from SQ anyway, there's no sense in spending too much time messing with the tweeters.
