ok, the quick easy way, but least accurate way to set gain would be by ear or to look at the gain dial and set it as close to 2.5 volts as you can. There should be numbers around the adjustment knob. like 2 volts to .2 or something like that.
the more accurate way would require the use of a digital multimeter and test tones.
Matt, where in the North are you?

Yeah, I'm more northern than you. I'm from Upper Michigan. North East Wisconsin actually, but I claim the U.P.
You know, I don't know if things are still the same, but back in the day, engine whine was a common occurance. Of course, the majority of the equipment people were buying was total crap. Anyway, I used to see noise filter after noise filter stuffed behind head units. I've seen several of those things in the same system. I think I pulled like three of them out of the same car once. Just a mess. I was one of the few people in the area at the time who would actually troubleshoot the problem and fix it rather than just supress it and everything else. I take pride in my work and I love showing up the next guy. lol. So fixing others crap installs was almost more rewarding than doing it myself the first time. It was more time consuming and nerve racking, but at the end, I stuck it to another crap installer. lol. Maybe that's childish. But too many people are called installers who have no business doing it. It's one thing to try to install your own stuff or even your buddies. It's quite another thing to work for CC, BB or local shop and not even understand how to fix engine whine or use a relay.
Now that I got that out of my system ... what is up with Illinois drivers? Damn FIBs.

I always think it's easier to fix someone elses install cuz all the wires are ran, and all you gotta do is just change some things here and there seems faster to me. But it's more fun to do all the work cuz you learn a new trick with every car you instal

FIBs. F'ing Illinois Bastards. You guys can't drive. lol.
Most of the time when I'm reduing an install I end up pulling everything out and reduing it. I'm very picky about things. It's not too often I leave wiring where it is. People run wires in bad places sometimes and often use crappy wire anyway. I've seen "Car Audio Shops" install door speakers with one, maybe two screws by sliding a speaker not ment to be in that hole up to one corner and screwing it in. Leaving a huge gaping hole most of the way around the speaker. The bottom half of the speaker just flapping in the breeze. Iv'e seen power wires run over the fender and down through the door rather than going through the firewall. I've seen amps mounted upside down under rear decks. What else ...
A friend of mine had a bunch of screens in his car, a couple amps, subs, nintendo, dvd player and what ever else. We ripped everything out of his car and started from scratch. I was able to reuse the wire that was there, I just made better use of it. By the time we got done, everything worked way better, we got rid of the messes that were all over his car, added an actuator to open and close the trunk while he was rolling around town (his idea, I didn't want to do it, I thought it was gay), and when we were done we probably had a couple hundred various chunks of wire left over. It was rediculous.
