Look into Viper 5000 /That is what i have had for the past year and its been perfect. Its a 2 way with a picture of your car on the remote so you know whats happening and has pretty good range.
Also look into CRIMESTOPPER because they specialize in only Alarms for cars and thats it. They make a really good product that works.

Good car alarm brands
All things considered in this thread...
If you can get a top shelf Compustar system installed for $400
(and you trust the shop)
Just do it man!
Sounds like a really decent deal right there. Just make sure we're comparing apples to apples here... do you get everything with that? (all the extras)
Lotas has features which normally come seperate to alot of systems, so make sure you know what you're getting.
Keep in mind, Lotas has a standard tranny and that does cost extra. Your car also may not need door isolation, etc... prices often depend a whole lot on the vehicle, some can be complex and time consuming to install into.
But that said, from my calling around to get prices on the AstroStart stuff, I'd say $400 installed for any good quality system is a straight up fair (if not really good) deal.

Thats true about the dog and a 12ga...
but most states do not allow you to defend property, only person.
And that, in my opinion, is very wrong. You bust your ass to have nice things, and people can pretty much just help themselves to it, without any real penaties whatsoever... hardly a chance in hell they'll even get caught.
And also, if your dog mauls a thief, be prepared to get sued for .5 to 1mil.

didn't bother reading this whole thread, but to answer the O.P., most shops will not touch an alarm system they don't sell themselves.
My shop wouldn't for a number of reasons, some of which include:
no warranty coverage
no wiring color codes for the alarm
no way to swap out a part of one is bad out of the box
no way to know what the customer is bringing you
aside from that, if you decide to install your own alarm system, go with any DEI brand alarm (clifford, viper, etc) or CompuStar.
any of those will serve you well.
