Ugh, my Mustang had 4x10 whizzer cones in the front. My ears would shrivel up in agony if I still had to listen to those things.

well I phrased the crossover thing wrong. I should've said there were no crossovers being used by anybody.....not around here anyway. Then again back then we cared more about who could sound the loudest rather than who could sound the best.

first tinkering was putting the digital tuner from an '86 dodge van into a '77 Volare station wagon, and two externally mounted speakers wired to the radio mounted by the coat hangers behind the front seats by the ceiling. it was better than the analog tuner and single dash 3" speaker.

then put a tape deck into the Van.

monkied with the radio in the 84 daytona

had a first get Pioneer DEH-55 CD player/tuner in an 89 Shadow, wired to 3 coustic amps, two MTX boxes I swapped out for two 8" tubes, kenwood front components, stock rears, hand made crossovers.

had an Alpine 7905, and a few 7903 CD players with the green buttons (the 7905 I changed to orange buttons using clarion's bulb sleeves) in the 88 Festiva, before changing to the $900 Pioneer premier CD player.

Oh, also had a kenwood KAC-555 pullout (tape) and a fixed two-know kenwood with a cool blue display.. the older tapedeck was in my 280Z with sony full ranges and two encased 6x9s in the hatch, and the pullout was in the Shadow before the DEH55 went in.

My first car, 1980 Mercury Capri (fox body). 200ci straight six with a 1-barrel carb, 4sp overdrive with 8 track. I loved that car, came with louvers on the back and a popup sunroof. I took out the 8track, and put in a Pioneer cassette deck with autoreverse. It had a brand new tuner called "Supertuner" and my FM was great! I could keep the cassette in and forward through OR reverse through the tape. And if I wanted to hear the other side, I could push the button that looked like this "<<" and the button that looked like this ">>" together and whammo...it was on the other side.
Amazing stuff that technology was. I had a Pyramid 7 band 250w graphic eq/booster powering the bigdaddy of all 6x9s out...the infamous Jensen Quadrax! I had 4 sets of them in the hatch, no box, I just cut out the holes and screwed them in. My first install! Would play Kim Mitchell's "Go for a Soda" like nothing else out! Then the Alpines came out with the green buttons. Well like the good little brat that I was, when I got my next car, I demanded an alpine headunit! So I got that when I got my 2nd car, a 1984 Buick T-Type. Had the turbo and 4x10's. I put in Alpine 4x10's cause they matched the head unit...not because they sounded good. NO 4x10 sounded good. Ahhhhhh memories! Replaced the 4x10's for some M&M Polypropeline 6x9's in the 4x10 adapters. Then added some Pyle Driver free-air 10's with my first amplifier...an ads powerplate 100. Hell this was 1985.

i always like your stories.....its like we used to shop at the same flea market :happy055:
