Are we going to get into this again?
Every person in NOLA knew it was coming ahead of time and had plenty of warning to GTFO of town. Those who stayed did so of their own volition.
Aside from that, it's been pointed out that it was't Bush or the federal government who hesitated to respond, but La. and N.O. themselves that refused the help.

Anyway all of that aside, I really don't want to start a political debate on this board, off topic or not. I always end up having to close these down because they get heated and people get upset.

Let's try to avoid that this time. I know Will is going to have some interesting comments though, having witnessed most of it first hand.

I believe most of this should work on a personal level.

I mean come on, debate all you want. What is done is done ;)

"Living in New Orleans is like living in a soup can... surrounded by soup."

I liked that quote and I forgot who said it.

New Orleans is geographically a bowl. Levees all around, trying to keep out water. On top of that, New Orleans was built on a swamp.

We knew what hurricanes do. That's why we GTFO. There were people who didn't have the means to get out, but then there were stubborn people who were fearless. Some of which were my neighbors. We didn't find out that they made it out until a week later.

I've seen a couple floods before. May '95 was the worst one before Katrina. Not sure exactly what happened, but the water rose about 2.5 feet in front of my house. The flooding happened on both sides of the levees and all. My house is raised about 3 feet so no water got in the house then. The water sat there from 1 am to I guess around 11am or noon the next day. We had a van then that got messed up by the water. about 7 inches in the van. My dad also had to tear the carpeting out of his truck. It was scary watching the water slowly rise up to the top porch step. It was really strange to see stuff floating around inside that van too. We recovered from that flood pretty quickly.

I'll have to ask my dad about the recovery and all. He had to report back to work (airport fireman, also does intermediate EMT work) and did shifts of 4 days on, 8 days off. There was constant, exhausting work at first, being that the airport was a staging area for transporting trapped people. There was the national guard camps all over the airport (tent cities). My dad did get to ride in one of the fire fighting helicopters that dumps 800 gallons of water. He got to see the city from the sky as it was flooded. He said, "you couldn't tell where you were half the time" the water was still high, then. He got to go to my house on foot before anyone was allowed back into New Orleans. Him and one of his coworkers brought a kayak and had to use that to see my house. Meanwhile, there were boats whizzing around like it was a lake trying to find survivors.

I can tell you that the progress now is not bad along, but if there was money, we could have had everything cleaned up probably 2 months ago at least. They still aren't allowing people to live in the 9th ward; the 9th ward was one of the poorest areas of the city and most of the cheap old houses there just floated off their foundation and into the street.

The latest news was that congress passed a bill allowing us to receive up to 150k to either rebuild or sell our property. They subtract our insurnance money from that though. I'm not sure when we'll get that money.

That is the latest from Bush though, that the whitehouse knew what the situation was going to be the day BEFORE it even hit.

I'd be more offended if we had a President that didn't know what was going to happen with a Class 5 Hurricane coming.

I want to know when it became the government's job to bail everybody out. You didn't see this crap when Hurricane Andrew, Hugo, and numerous others hit. People were just smart enough to GTFO and accepted that hurricanes are part of living near a coastline..
