Knocking noise

Hello, I am new to this forum, So please forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this.

I have a pair of Cerwin Vega VS-100 3-way home speakers. On one of them the woofer is making a knocking noise that coincides with the beat. The louder and harder the diaphram beats, the louder and harder the knocking noise is. I took the woofer out of the speaker box to see if there is any visible rips in the diaphram or voice coil cover, there is none. This is making me wanna bang my head against a wall

: Any help would be greatly appreciated

sounds to me like the speaker is bottoming out... is it like a low hard knock or a high twing sound?

The cone might be out of alignment. It's pretty much good as dead if you keep playing it, I'm sorry to say. You'd be best off replacing the woofers.

I blew up some 8" speakers I got out of the trash that made that sound. But they also made a grumbling sound too, but I think that was because their surrounds rotted off :) I actually have video of this...

We have a home audio section, it's far down the list.

How old are these? I had a vega stealth sub that was doing this. It would bottom out real eazy on low wattage. Even tho it was rated at 200rms, it would bottom out at about 100 or so. The whole thing was real loose, so that might be your problem too.

They are from around 1998

It is a lower knock, it coincides with the beat....it just started a cpl weeks ago, with no warning or reason.

Is there a way too check the alignment of the cone?

Thats what mine sounded like, I just ended it's life by blowing it up :) it was fun, the VC didn't blow but it seperated at the spider.

Well is it possible it is seperating from the spider then?

Well, I doubt that without physically taking apart the driver. However, I think that makes more of a scraping or scratching noise.

High Society is probably right with the cone ungluing from the spider.

If you can take the speaker out and place your hand behind the cone, push outward gently (and evenly), if you see it detaching, then you will know for sure.

I thought you looked at it and checked? You need new speakers anyway, you living in the past, 98, get with the program :) http://www.adireaudio.com they have some home audio subs you can get. http://www.partsexpress.com dayton audio, you can get there subs for cheap too. Great products.
