Free air 8" or 10" mounted on back??

Post by tmorefi »

I have a 4 door sedan and was considering mounted either a 8" or 10" sub (free air) on the back deck facing up towards the window? I have a few IDv3's I could use but would this work ok? Not looking for any crazy bass just something to help round out ther system. I am afraid the back "deck" would rattle too much and the free air wouldn't sound very good. Any comments? Thanks.

not familiar with your subs at all but i have in the past used free air kicker subs that sounded good. as far as your deck you will have to make a baffle and secure it and that will include any sound deadening that you need to do.

They are Image Dynamics IDv3 8" subs. They are not free air subs but the spec says they can be used in a free air situation. I could buy other subs if needed. Interested more if the application can be done and then I can decide which sub.

Why not a small stealth box? I'm sure that sedan has a place in the trunk for a nice stealth look. My buddy has a free air pioneer in his deck, and it sounds like garbage IMO.

It can work, you just have to do a lot of prepping. Free air gets best results if you seal off the front and back waves very well, via extensive use of expanding foam, a good baffle and a lot of sound deadening.

I put two 10" CDT MS-100 mini box subs in the rear deck of a 95 Monte Carlo.

The results were mediocre at very best. I figured it would be really loud since the subs were right there. It was not. It may work for more of a mid range application but if you want sub bass this is not the way to go.

you also need subs designed for free aitr use.. you can't use any sub off the shelf in an infinite baffle setup.
you'd be better off just putting a small sealed box in the trunk and coupling the trunk space to the cabin air with the openings in the rear package shelf.
