stereo install question

Post by z812 »

I have a 86 300zx. Putting in a sony explode cd player. Have installed this stereo in about three of my previous cars with no trouble. but this one has me puzzled.

I ordered the wiring harness for this car. Matched up all the wires, capped off the ones i did not use. There were 2 common grounds coming from the car to the stereo. Why? and what do i do connect all three together?

OK everything is hooked up, but the radio dosent come on, and when i plug in what is supposed to be the speaker wire bundle to the harness, it blows the interior lamp fuse?

So this is where i am. Anyone that can help me please do so or i'll be the guy riding around with a jambox in the shotgun seat.

It must not be wired correctly.

I would use a multi meter or a test light to check each "ground" to determine which really is. My guess is one of them grounds is connected to the dome light.

If you can, pull each speaker out an write down what colors are on them so you know what your doing up front for sure.

Color Codes:

B = black
G = green
L = blue
LG = light green
R = red
W = white
Y = yellow
For below:

Abbrieviation = Color of wire = Long name
The color after the slash (/) is the stripe color. i.e. R/G = red wire with green stripe.
SF, GL, and SS models should all be the same.
All models:

ILL = R/G = Illumination
IGN = Y/G = Ignition (12V when key is in ACC or ON position)
12V = L/R = Always 12V
ANT = G/B = Signal to antenna
RF+ = R/W = Right Front Speaker Positive
RF- = R = Right Front Speaker Negative
LF+ = L/W = Left Front Speaker Positive
LF- = L = Left Front Speaker Negative
GND = _ = Ground = any metal contact point on the frame.

this is what im going by. What do you think the ANT is? is that for the remote antenna?

And what about the ground? Are you just supposed to screw it to the frame instead of connect the wires?

And i bought a wiring harness so shouldnt all that be taken care of. i mean shouldnt i just match up the colors on the harness to the stereo im installing and plug it in?

Its not a matter of matching up colors. Its a matter of matching up what wire is what.

If you go by that it should be correct then unless someone altered your car.

Ha. No kidding, never trust Scosche kits to actually match whats what, just use 'em for the plug so you don't have to cut the harness.
