testing for a blown coil

so i set my dmm to 200 on ohms,checked each coil...each coil read between 4 and 4.3 ohms...did i do this right?are my subs still ok?i ask because i fried my crossfire bmf 600d the other day,well i called them yesterday and they said it was one of three things...blown sub,bad ground,or low voltage...so i'm doing the process of elimination thig...thanx

what woofer is it?

depending on temperature, the connection, and what dmm you used, 4.0 - 4.3 ohm would be regarded at a 4 ohm nominal driver, per coil...

Most 4 Ohm nomail subs have an RE (DC Resistance) of around 2.8 Ohms I thought...

its closer to 3.6 ohm @ room temperature, for copper coils... at least that's the industry accepted measurement for a nominal 4.. some companies have coils that stand somewhat differently..

considering the source.. its quite likely those higher DCR coils are normal...

I do remember hearing of several ED drivers with high standing DCR's..

You clipped the amp one way or another. Extreme clipping kills solid state amps (or tube amps for that matter, tube just handle clipping a lil better) very quickly. How high were you using the amp when it blew, extremely loud, to the point of lights dimming and so forth?

yeah,about that loud...so do you think it's just the amp?do you think my subs are ok?...crossfire said it will cost $110 to fix it,if it can be fixed,considering the amp retailed for $500 or better i think it's probably worth it...then again,i've got my eye on an autotek mean machine sx1200,are those pretty good?

no amplifier is going to do well if you abuse it and starve it for current while running it hard. You'll kill pretty much any amplifier, although one with a variable duty cycle PWM power supply might survive a bit longer under those circumstances.
The solution is to make sure the amplifier(s) you do use has the current it needs, and that the gain is set properly to match the input voltage.
