Help with wiring my Audiobahn aw 1200 q and SPL 460 phantom amplifier

Post by Dedbeats »

I've got an audiobahn 12 inch sub and a spl 460 phantom amp, on a factory Honda accord 2003 model and I hooked it up it sounded pretty good but I knew it wasn't reaching its potential. I road around with it like this for a week or do pretty much just satisfied to finally have some substantial bass again. A little background of my knowledge in car electronics and speakers. I can pretty much wire anything up, can make my own mods and we'll just say I somewhat know a good bit but not really technical terms. Sometimes don't know why just know that it's done that way, and when it comes to car audio, I really don't know technical terms, but I'm great with sound being a producer of sorts. So back to it, I finally decided to tweak the amp and see what I could get out of it. Had it sounding awesome! Before tweak hu bass was running around 4 - 6 (max is 6 ) just to get it somewhat loud. So when I started tweaking on it I set everything basically flat at 0. Adjusted amp without bass boost tweaking everything slightly as it kept improving. Was gonna tweak until I got slight distortion with it at the Max vol I tend to have my vol to, then adjust back down a little till no distortion and enough that would still give me room for vol up. It sounded great! Clean smooth hard deep hitting bass! So my brothers work partner gets home (he's been staying with us for a few weeks.) Dudes really smart and really nice guy, but.... He without hearing what I had decided to rewire the speaker and since I heard his system that's crazy he knew what was going on n let him, when he was done, you hardly could hear/feel the bass and if the bass started to sound good as he was adjusting on it, it would kick the amp off before you could even get it loud, same with vol n bass on head unit one click to far n it shut off. This was volume running around 20 tops at like 35 40 . it wasn't loud at all whereas I had it running at 12 before he messed with it and rewired the sub. And it was taking my breath around 20. He told me I needed new pwr wires etc.... But I just want it hooked back how it was and my settings. I have no idea how to wire the sub but I tried using a diagram and rewired it. Popped the amp fuse. With ignition off replace it with s 30 amp fuse popped immediately, tried one more time ignition still off and I saw arcing n smoke resulting in yet again popped fuse. Anyone shed some light on this whole entire yes I know im sorry really long post? If the sub wiring is popping the amp fuses, how it may have originally been wired. What was wrong with his wiring method, how can I wire everything correctly for best performance with my setup also any other tips n what not. BTW I'm using a line output converter running off the rear factory 6x9s Thanks in advance and sorry about the super long post lol I just want my system back

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.

Hopefully the amp isn't fried, try this for a test. Unhook the sub completely and replace the fuse for the amp. Does it still blow, or does it turn on?
If it blows, then either the amp is bad or the wire is shorted somewhere.

If it remains on, then something he did with the sub could be causing it to blow the fuse. Which is odd, because normally an amp would just go into protection mode.

What's the model of the sub, do you know if it's a dual voice coil sub?

Hopefully we can get this fixed for you.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome and quick reply, I think I may have found the issue, do before I took the sub out if the box and wired it according to that diagram I had taken the hu out brought it inside so I could get a look at the board, cause I wan to hack an aux in jack, by somehow tricking it into believing I installed the 14 pin aux connector from Honda. Started off as I'm too broke to buy one, but now its just become something that's kickin my ass annnnnd, well I can't have that lol, but when i put the hu back in I left screw's out of alot spots mainly just to secure it cause I plan on removing it agsin soon. So on my way home I was listening to music. And it started sounding like it was shorting out (Amps/remote wire are unhooked currently) and yea the subs have 4 wire input connectors on each polar opposite. So total of 8 counting the positive and negative. They aren't labeled anything though . it'd be awesome to get this setup sounding great again!

Sub says aw1200q on the magnet I believe, and 700 watts. And then my amp is a SPL 460 phantom series, or something like that. it was hitting hard until they got rewired and then the it would keep going in protection mode if you cut volume up, bass up on the head unit too high or if you cut the bass up on the amp too high, or the low pass too high or too low. whatever happened with the difference in how it was wired was first prob because I had it sounding killer like literally 15 min. Vefirw that. I could crank it up to 12 on the volume and it was taking my breath. with the rewire it was all screwed up I just don't know how it was wired to begin with.

OK, looking up the sub, it appears it's an audiobahn AW1200Q which is a dual 4 ohm sub.

As for the amp, is this the one you have?

I can't find a whole lot of specs on the amp, but I think it can be bridged down to 4ohm.
So with your sub, that's not really going to work. Your sub can either be wired for 2 ohm (parallel) or 8 ohm (series).

About the only thing you could do, is run one coil on each channel.

So one coil on the right, and one coil on the left. Not the best approach, but it's doable

Other than that, I would double check all your wiring. make sure you don't have any shorted connections, make sure your ground on the amp is short and connected tightly.
Just make sure everything is the way it should be.

So I got it working again, the + was getting shorted by a Nick in the line to the body. Amp powered up and started working, I did install a new hu Panasonic. Didn't have time to run rca to the back of the hu do its still running off of the loc coming off the back speakers when I get a chance I'll wire it to the head unit. But on the way I have it wired the speaker anyway they have 4 connectors on each polar opposite of the speaker top and bottom I've got positive running to positive/negative running and negative and then the two middle positive/negative run to the speaker connectors

--++
++-- okay I may have said that wrong in my previous post, I would have to look at it to see. so this is how the positive and negatives are set up on the speaker can you draw me me a diagram showing how it needs to be set up. But since it's still running off the loc any adjustments I do to the radio affect the sub when I need to be able to adjust that separate so I'll try to adjust it when I run the RCA's to the back of the new head unit

With your sub/amp combination, I think this is your best option.
