Mistake car

I thought I posted this here but I didnt.

After the Alero was gone I went and looked at a few Auroras. I ended up buying a 2001 Aurora 3.5L with 160K on it.

It ran rough, figured it was the coils. 30 miles into our return home trip it over heated. I had it towed from Columbus to Toledo area...$$$$$$$$$$

My back finally felt good enough to do some work tonight.

I figured its head gasket time, but I might be wrong.

No water in the oil!

I think the Tstat was stuck. Also the previous owner only had water in it- which doesnt cool well.

Over next few days Im changing the oil filter, oil. Adding correct coolant mixture as well as replacing the water pump gasket.

It has a new water pump, hoses, radiator and supposedly thermostat. Im gonna run it without the tsat for now...

I hope like hell it was a simple overheat due to the water and its savable.

Thats actually incorrect. Water cools much better than a mixture of Ethelyn glycol and water of straight Ethelyn glycol.

The heat of fusion for ethylene glycol is 43.26 calories per gram. Waters heat of fusion is about 85.

However the mixture of ethylene glycol and water raises the boiling point of water so that the cooling system can run much hotter without gassing. It also lowers the freezing point.

Straight water isn't the cause of it over heating.

Was it low on coolant/water? How does the water look? Any oil in it (the water)? Did you do a compression check? Pressure check the coolant system? Is it throwing up any codes?

Running rough and over heating? I'd say head or intake gasket.

The previous owner probably had problems keeping cool, which explains all the new parts. When he told me about all those new parts I would of ran, especially if it was running rough.

Ever finished an engine swap at 3am and realized you didn't have coolant? I have!

i run a mixture of water, water wetter, and and maybe a 1/4 gallon of amsoil coolant.

I run my urine through it. It stays cool to the core.

the ammonia will corrode the block and heads besides eat away the gaskets.

Thus keeping the cooling medium in the system and not on the roadway in ending keeping the engine cooler.

Im not sure if I have a compression tester available that will fit and reach down in there. This is a DOHC motor. Will check on that tonight. No sense in dumping $30 into the motor if its junk. Already dumped to much $$$ into the car.

Usually the ones with the long rubber hose work good. Most parts stores will loan you one!
