Oil Spill... What are your opinions?
This thing is just a mess. Their latest "Top Kill" efforts have failed. Now they're going to try and cut the pipe and put a cap on it. Currently the pipe is slightly crimped from the explosion, so if the cap fails the leak will actually be worse than before.
It's already leaked between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf, which makes it the largest oil spill in US history. I know some things take time, but it seems their dragging their feet a little on this one.
If they can't get it capped it'll be August before they can get a shut off valve in place, which is the only "sure fire" way to stop the leak. Which at this point who knows if that will even work. It's actually pretty scary to think about.
This who mess is really discouraging me. I'm boycotting BP, not because they had an accident, but because it seems like they've taken several short cuts that lead up to this whole situation. Now 11 men are dead and we have a sea full of oil...
Let's all hope they can fix this mess and get it cleaned up quickly...
Anyways, I was just wondering what you guys think of the spill and BP's handling of it?

while i do think that bp hasnt handled the problem as well as they could have, the deepwater horizon became the deepest oil rig in 2009 and that means just about everything on that sucker is brand new technology. There were a couple of failsafes to avoid such catastrophes however, they failed to work properly. As far as i know a disaster such as this one had never happened before so engineers had to come up with ways to fix them, most of them have not been sucessful (last i heard the last attempt initially stopped the flow but the oil is once again leaking) Its not surprising that its taking a long time to fix a problem to which no one had the answers when it happened. I do also think that the media and bp are not telling us the entire truth about the environmental impacts and just how much oil is in the gulf right now i fear the oil that lies on the bottom will cause an environmental catastrophe, especially if it gets into the gulf stream

i work with servs up here not full time but im a first responder so is my dad uncle and grandpa incase theres another big spill. from what i gather from the bp guys we work with not the pr guys but the actual workers they expect it to take 7 months or more to fix they also said bp/alyeska pipeline company made all of them take 10000 a year pay cuts and laid off allot of people. it looks good on paper because it saves money but now they struggle to get done what needs to be done. they told us we were smart for standing together and almost going on strike because they wanted to cut our the fisherman/first responders pay too. i want to go down there and work on the cleanup but i have a new born my grandpa and uncle both made 1600 a day on the exxon valdez spill running boats and im just as good of a captain as they were if not better im also a lvl 3 hazwopper on land and water and have used oil booms since 02
my main concern with this is that they actually clean this mess and pay actual and punitive damages to all the people who will be screwed by this and not dick around for 20 years like exxon they got the original pay out drop from 5 billion to around .5 i remember right b4 this happened they were on the radio up here saying we simply cannot afford it right afterward exxon/mobile posted world record earnings they even made money off of the payout money by investing it for almost 20 years. it was terrible lots of people lost everything the mayor of the town my family is from commited suicide and lots of other people who lost everything. people who lived off of the land couldnt any more and i can take you to a bunch of beaches that still have oil on the surface or a few inches down all over the prince william sound its sick.
im not against drilling for oil or anything but i do think they should work more on guaranteeing shit like this doesnt happen ever
oh and i think people should stop bitching about how obama is handling this theres not much he can do about this spill i dont really care for him but its not his fault people should stfu about politics and get this mess cleaned up

I really hope it doesn't take 7 months to stop this P.O.S from leaking.
Hurricane season is coming on fast and I could only imagine if a Katrina came though and flooded the coast with oil...
What a bunch of b.s!

ive been wondering how it would affect gas prices too has the price of crude oil gone up?
wasnt this well unfinished so i doubt it not producing will put a strain on supply. bp and others up here have a habit of finding oil then capping it until its needed or they get the price they want or get the state to give them what they want.

They should just drop some depth charges down there and blow it up ... burry it under itself. They're too worried about loosing the money the put into the drill efforts and retaping that pipe or whatever. Blow the shit up. Burry it. Done.
