polk audio bookshelf

so today i was at my cousins and he said he noticed something weird about his polk audio 3 way speakers (tweet, 5.25, 8"). He noticed that there wasnt much sound coming from the 8's and couldnt figure out why, so he took them out and turns out they are just passive radiators (no coil, no motor) I didnt get the model number down, i was just wondering why in the hell they would make the large woofer a passive radiator?

i'll get a pic of it after i come home from up north along with a model number, but looking at the back side of the basket there is no evidence of there ever being a motor attached, no bolt holes, tinsils, or glue anywhere, just a cone, spider, and basket. Also, there is only a 2 way crossover in there

because radiators are efficnent and inexpensive. they produce low bass without having to power the "woofer"

Its a very common design.

Polk makes good stuff at their higher end, though. I have two pair of FXi3 di/bi-pole surrounds for my HT and I adore them.
