oil filter is F#cked!

Post by Scarrell »

long time no post and what not huh? well my gf has an 89 ford taurus that was handed down to her, had 17,??? miles on it.. yada yada... anyway, ive changed the oil on this car a handful of times already, and yesterday for some reason, i just couldnt get the goddamn thing off.. so i lost it and put a screw driver to it and it just pretty much ripped it all off but the base of it, where it meets the car.. i have absolutely no idea how to get it off now.. i mean the front end could be removed i guess, but any other ideas? theres not much room, i can take pics or vid if needed.. but theres not much room for gripping. its just a horrible mess and im fed up and sore all over..

so let me know what you guys think can be done!

Well if you got it tore apart far enough, you should see the heavy/thick metal piece the rubber ring mounts to. It usually has holes in it.

Use a CHISEL or old flat blade screw driver. Put the tip on the hole and tap/swing away until it loosens.

1/4 turn after snug is all they go! Also invest in an oil filter wrench. I dont use those crappy straps. We have a plastic thing fits the filter and then my Uncle has these jaw like things that physically clamp the filter/bite into it.

Why was it so tight?

Sometimes you can get a big pair of channel locks on them...

That happened to me the last time I changed the oil in the 4Runner. Not sure why but the filter would not come loose. Luckily the Screwdriver trick worked for us, and it came off.

What really sucks with the 4Runner, there is no room at all to do anything where the filter is. You can only put the wrench on one way (otherwise it hits something) and then once you get it on, you can barely move it before it hits something.

I love Toyota but that's the second 4Runner where they put the filter in a stupid spot.

that's one thing i loved about my 92 jimmy the oil filter was on the driver side quarter panel at the top. was soooo nice. my buick isnt really that bud its just directly under the header and you cant get it from the bottom so it has to be cool.
