help with connecting amp to my dual R 12 Alpines

Post by iandowne22 »

I have 2 Type R 12in alpine subs- 500 watts each, My amp is a LA 798 Legacy ICE, 2 Channel 1000 Watt, I believe its a 4 olm amp, I could be wrong, so is someone knows this amp better than me please correct me.
My problem is I don't understand the ohms and how it should be conntected to the amp correctly, Specfically the ohms and how to connect it with the correct ohms pulling from the Subs.
I belive speakers are a dual 2 ohm voice. There are 2 red and black (right and left) hookups on each speaker. I have it wired so the red connects to the other red hookup on the same sub and the black connects to the other black hookup on the same sub then the wire runs from the speaker and connects to one of the 2 channels on the amp, and the other sub is wired the same, and then to the other channel on the amp.
Did do it right? or am I pulling to much ohms from the amp? am I going to dammage anything?
if So please tell me whats wrong and how I can fix it. Thanks much

you have each sub running at 1 ohm. (if its dual 2 ohm)

If they are in fact dual 2 ohm, you could run each sub off of 1 channel by wiring each sub's voice coils in series.

I suggest you go here and start learning: http://bcae1.com/ since it sounds like you really don't know what you are doing - that site is a start...

This will show you how to wire subs:

^ Good tips
Now it's time for me to chime in with the bad news... You have chosen good quality subs, but are not even coming close to their potential. While your amp says it's 1000watts, that is merely a max rating (which means nothing), the rms wattage is what you need to be looking at and your amp will only deliver 125w to each sub (250 watts rms total) @ 2ohm...
I would recommend you look into upgrading your amp to something that will deliver at least 750w rms @ 2 ohm (1000w rms @ 2 ohm for full potential).
A lot of novices in car audio get confused by the differences in Max and RMS ratings... Always look at RMS and at the best ohms rating configuration for your sub(s)... Max rating is merely an advertising ploy (which even some quality amp companies still use), but you will Never see that amount of power out of those amps.

since you already have the amp, you could just use it for now....

decide later if you want to get rid of it or not.

I'm guessing you'll blow it up anyway and need to buy another one...

I wasn't saying he couldn't use it... just letting him know that it's not actually delivering 1000w and that those Type Rs aren't getting nearly the amount of power they deserve and he'd be pleasantly surprised by the output with proper power.

I knew that, but didn't know if the OP would know that.

Well I have learned alot in the past 24 hours, I learned that my speakers are 4 ohm DVC, R 12 500 watts. I also learned how to wire them. I currently have Dual DVC Subwoofer Wiring; set up- Parallel/Parallel DVC Subwoofer Wiring, so off each speaker my ohm resistance is 2 ohms so 4 ohms total from amp, and then each sub run to 1 channel each (2 channel setup).
Is there any addvantage to bridging the speakers as the amp has this option.

also I do not know if this amp actually can handle 4 ohms pull, I cant find any specs on internet for it and is not written on the amp and of course I don't have the paper work with it. the model is a Legacy Ice LA 798 model 1000 watt, If any any knows let me know.

these sites help me figure this all out

Well now I feel the need to fair warn you as the path you are heading is going to fry your amp... Your amp is only 2 ohm stable and cannot handle the long haul load of 1 ohm.
Here is the specs on your amp in this link (pdf): http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu816J_FJGZcA5gBXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyZDRyOTBlBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNwRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkA0NTMDFfNzY-/SIG=13iuv53vo/EXP=1240627450/**http%3a//www.qualitycaraudio.com/store/manuals/LA498-598-698-798-898-998-1098-1498-1898-2098.pdf
You'll find it on page 2
