HID light conversion legal?

Post by k0rnyfr33k »

Well my cavy has some sucky dim lights and i wanted to do a HID conversion to it. I did a little bit of research on it and it doesn't necessarily have to be DOT certified to be legal. It just has to follow FMVSS 108 regulations..... And I'm not 100% sure it does or not... So can anybody clarify this for me?

I've been running 8000k hids in my low beams and fog lights for a while with no issues.

If you just replaced the bulbs its not really an HID conversion.

i dont really know actually if it is legal or not but how could they call you out on it being illegal? Cars come factory with them, why cant older cars be switched over to them, ya know? I have been wanting a set, just never bit the bullet.

Are you putting HID bulbs in a Halogen reflector/projector?

Then technically that's not going to be legal, those housings weren't designed for bulbs with that much output. They usually put out a lot of glare when you do this, and are just asking to be pulled over.

I did an HID Conversion on my Camry... however I already had projectors and housings in the front lights so it was an easy deal... If you are going to be trying to put HID's in a Halogen housing its Illegal and dangerous... not to mention it looks like poopy....

There are a few civics and Cavaliers that i know of that have the projector housings bought off of ebay... and they did the HID conversion and looks very nice...

I have Xentec HID system which is all mcculloch bulbs and balasts.

That forum has a flashing background that drives me crazy. I could not leave that page up for more than 10 seconds. Who ever is on charge of that forum should reconsider that background image.
