Screw and glue...

Post by MobileAudio219 »

When youre building a enclosure do you glue and screw/brad, or just glue by itself?

I personally use glue and screws.

It's a little more hassle, but I just feel more comfortable using a mechanical fastener... especially if its a high power set-up..

I use both.

The simple fact is when building boxes nobodies cuts are square and perpendicular enough to take advantage of glues real strength.

I have seen people not use any type of screws at all and just hold the wood in place and glue away. Personally, I'm a little leery of doing that but in all reality, the glue is what holds the box. The screws are really just there to hold the box tight until the glue sets. So.... I too glue and screw. Pre-drill though.... ha, i haven't pre-drilled anything in a long time.

Glue and Staples or Glue and Brad's over build and get your self an angle grinder with a 24 or 48 grit pad.

lol, thats exactly what I do Bill.

But thats not always perfect either. Especially when you make a 5 sided area and go to put the last piece on... Its never right, ever. I can be within 1/32" everywhere and still not be on when it comes to the last board...

Mine are usually pretty close and i can almost always fill the small gap's with tightbond. if its a decent sized gap ill rip it out and retry. you can always clamp it if its off a bit and hold it in place till the glue sets up.

how many apart to you put your screws?

I usually go around 4-6", or whatever keeps the screws an equal distance apart... I measure and mark where each screw goes, just so everything is evenly spaced...

I probably get a little excessive with the screws..

About 4-6" here also.

I used to get real intense on their positioning, but now I just shoot for close. Of course with the screws I use now I dont even have to predrill. Just zap them in and DONE.
