Am I wrong here?

Post by MobileAudio219 »

So this summer I bought a 88 chevy from my uncle... My uncle basically used it to haul wood, tow, ect...

The motor was just an old worn out 305, but he towed his 28ft camping trailer on vacation a few months prior to me buying it, and other than using a little oil it did fine...

Well I had it for a couple months, I only used it on my uncles property to play around in the mud and to cut wood... We never even filled out the title..

Then one day my cousin started bugging me, trying to get me to sell him the truck... After a few weeks I gave in, and sold him the truck on payments...

Now when I sold him the truck I told him "It's not an everyday driver, and the motor is just an old worn out 305, so baby it and keep the oil checked." I even threw in a 350 that I was going to rebuild and swap in the truck...

So after he gets the truck about half way paid for he takes it... The first thing he does is lets his roomate start driving his other truck, and makes the chevy his daily driver/work truck... He installs cable, and drives about 65 miles a day on the highway, and about 100 miles a day total...

Now the first day he took it home he changed the oil, good idea...

But he drives for about a week and then calls me saying the motor is knocking... So I drive up and meet him at a gas station, he starts it up and its indeed knocking... I said "whens the last time you checked your oil"

Turns out that after he changed the oil he never checked it afterwards, and doesnt remember how many quarts he put in it...

So yeah, its 2 quarts down.... So we fill it up and the knocking quites down, but doesnt go totally away...

So a few days later it starts snowing, and he picks me up and he starts beating on it pretty good.. whatever, its his baby...

A few days later he calls me and tells me that the truck is on the side of the highway.. blown up! So I grabbed a chain and pull him to my uncles shop...

When we pull the motor out, it spit 6 rods, broke the cam shaft, and basically tore the oil pan off...

He swears he was doing 60 and not winding the truck out at all.... ;)

When we took the truck to my uncles shop, he agreed to pay my uncle 25 bucks a day for shop/tool/wood useage...

Rather than rebuilding the 350 that I gave him, he decides to buy a lower milage one thats ready to go... so we slap a new clutch on it and dropped her in...

Then he tells me my uncle, oh, I'll have to catch you later on the shop fee... Not a problem...

Fast foward 2 weeks (today.)

I was talking to my cousin and he said something along the lines of "its stupid I have to pay for the shop fee, he's the one that sold me the truck"

This didnt sit to well, because I actually sold him the truck...

I told him to baby the truck, he didnt...

I told him to keep an eye on the oil, instead he changes the oil and doesnt fill it up???

I told him it wasnt a daily drive, first thing he does is left his roomate drive his truck, and daily drives the chevy...

I told him to NOT drive it on the interstate because of the low gears, to take the service road instead.. He drove the interstate every day...

I found him the new motor, helped him swapped it out, and even helped pay for some of the parts...

When I sold him the truck, I sold him a table saw, a drill, and some other stuff with it for one price.. I've let him miss payments, even though I needed the money myself...

The kid wanted a 4wd, he couldnt get a loan because is credit is HORRIBLE...

So I sold him the truck for what I gave for it... Oh wait, for 50 dollars more than I paid for it, though I did cleaned it up real good and fixed a few little things on it...

I found him the deal on the durango (do a search), helped him get it home, I was helping him pull the transmission out of it... Loaned him the money for the new transmission... I mean, I try to help him out as much as possible, and he's helped me out too... It works both ways I guess...

But yet, he acts like he was screwed over (by my uncle, not me.) I guess he thinks it wasnt right for my uncle to charge him for using the shop and tools (air compressor), and for wood to heat the shop... But its like I told, my uncle is fighting disability right now so money is tight, and he still has a mortgage payment on the shop to make (we just built it about 5 years ago), so the he rents out the shop to friends in family to help make the payment...

I'm not mad at my cousin, I'm more disappointed...

He was easy on it... 2nd truck...

That is family for ya buddy, I did sorta the same thing a few years ago, I had a jeep cherokee that my wifes cousin wanted I sold it to him, telling him the drivers window was not working to good, all before I sold him the vehicle, the windo falls in a few months after that and he gets mad. I didn't worry about it, and I dont think you should either.

Yeah, I just thought it was funny that he thought my uncle should let him use the garage for free... It wasnt my uncles deal, it was ours...

And we both know that if he would of listened to me he'd still be driving the truck... with the 305 in it!!!

On a side note, for a truck thats 20 years old it drives great... The motor was the one weakness, now it has a real strong running, low milage 350... He absolutely loves the truck...

Everytime he talks about it he says "I'm not mad, but I just think....."

And I follow with "If you beat on anything long enough it'll eventually die!" Then I make a fist and ask if he wants to test my theory? :attitude

Haha, but yeah... I'm not going to be selling him anything anymore, and if I do, he'll sign a note saying that it's his baby... :attitude

i'd be ticked off too if i were in your shoes, it happens to all of us at one point or another, i bought my car from a friend of a friend and was told there were no mechanical issues, 3 months after i bought it the engine blew, turns out the timing belt went and the previous owner basically put a band aid on the engine to get it sold

1: you don't sell cars or property to family. ever.
2: you especially don't sell to someone whpo has already ****ed his credit up that badly. That's a sign that he can't hold a job or pay his bills right there, and that he has no ability to manage his money.
3: he's young and thus a dumbass about caring for a car as a given, based on the law of averages.

I'm not accusing you here, I'm just offering some wisdom garnered by age and experience.

Now fallow above advice and beat his ass. haha

We buy and sell each other vehicles on a semi regular basis, this is the first issue we've ever really had...

It's not a big issue, it's just dont understand why he thinks he shouldnt have to pay for shop/tool/wood useage... He's used the shop many times and never paid a dime, but while my uncles down a little money really helps out...

It'd be a different stop if my cousin went out and helped cut wood, or just stop by and visit, but the only time he goes out there is to ride his quad or to use the garage...

IDK, it just seems selfish...

I actually owe him a good punch to the face, I might have to cash in on that...

I think Kiki the Cat got ate by GlassWolf.

Just a guess.

But ya its kind of shitty. Then again having to pay family to rent a garage seems shitty also. I can understand paying for his own heat though.
