Is this selfish of me

Post by Tim »

Okay guys, I got an argument to present to you: I am looking into another job start out pay is gonna be less than I am making now about 2.00 less possibly but I will top out at around the same pay as I make now maybe a bit more. 6 mos- 1 year to top out.

The place is just starting up and I would be able to get in the door pretty easy, I have friends who work there that can get me in. I would however lose the seniority I have built at the place I work now, almost 6 yrs. and 3 weeks vacation.

My wife likes the security of what I have now the seniority, the benefits, the vacation, the hours. 6am-2pm M-F.

I am burnt out with where I am at now, I know that, and once you get burnt out nothing seems to make it any better,

but is it selfish of me to want to move on because I want to, and am I not thinking of her and our little boy.

I need some good 3rd party advice.

You gotta do what you gotta do.

My last job I was at I got burned out/stressed out and financially maxed out so I quit it without another for sure job lined up.

Im fairly happy where I work now and I make more money.

As long as you can take care of business financially do what you want to do. Just because you have seniority and the company is older doesnt mean it cant fail. Places are dropping like flies. Albeit a new place has a very high risk factor.

Depends on your full situation though. If the wife works and can make ends meet on her own or close to it I would go for it. If your the sole provider I wouldnt. Like I said new business's especially right now are risky as all hell.

For most of us its not what we like to do but what we can do well that doesnt piss us off to bad.

I hate to say it bro, but it all comes down to paying the bills... I think with the facts that our economy is shot, new businesses are huge risks, and the fact that you have a kid at home means that you're probably better off staying put right now.

There will be plenty of time to take risks in the future when you don't have a child to care for at home... I don't think you're being selfish at all since you're taking the time to think things through and ask others opinions... I hate to say it but 99% of the country doesn't like the job they're in to pay the bills... I myself have been in the housekeeping business for 23 years and while I love my clients like family I hate the job, but I'm good at it and it pays for the majority of the bills. I've had plenty of other jobs (part time and full time both) that I did while doing this to try and keep my mind occupied on other things and even now still do with Car Godz... So the best advise I can give you is stick with the stability that keeps a roof over you and the families heads and explore new ways to relieve the stress of the day to day grind.

Mike, I think you make a good point. I guess the stability that makes her feel comfortable is the same stability that is keeping a roof over our heads right now. I guess I will just stay where I am at. You know, its not so much that I don't like where I am at right now, I know its work and work is gonna suck no matter where I am at right??

I guess I will just stay,

I agree, with how things are right now. Starting out with a brand new company is a very risky thing to do. I personally would stay where you are, and keep the benefits of seniority and hopefully job security.

3 weeks vacation time??? Heres what I would do if you really want to try out the other job....

Fill out an application for the company youre interested working for, tell them you need a two weeks notice before you can start...

Once you have a start date for the new company, take all your vacation time from that time forward (from your current company.)

After the first week you have to decide which company you want to give up...

If you dont like the new job, either say screw them and leave instantly, and then cancel your vacation time and go back to work.. Or give your two weeks notice at the new company and double your salary for two 3 weeks (but lose all your vacation.)

Just an idea...

I agree with the others though, you're probably better off staying were youre at for now...

Yeah Justin, I thought of that, but I think I will just stay for now. Cause the more I think about it, the more I realize that work is gonna suck wherever I am at or whatever I am doing.

And I dont want to cause any social unrest in the house. And I also don't want to go through the whole process of starting over again.

Guys I really appreciate all your opinions. It has really helped, get me through this.

At some point you will make a move. Right now probably isnt the best though.

We all want to do something we would like to do. Its just a compromise. If we could, we would just sit around the house and not worry about money...
