no sound from subs

Post by Tim »

A buddy of mine is having trouble with his subs. The details: Pioneer head unit, a set of 8" ultimate subs, Punch 500a2.

The first problem he had I fixed: the remote wasn't connected right.

Now he has power to his amp but no sound from subs. His head unit plays fine, his factory speakers play fine, just no sound from subs.

Thanks

Tim

Check RCA INPUT and OUTPUT then check wires to and from subs. Check for correct load's check for protect light.

RCA's are correct, his head unit has only the one set, and so does the amp,
the load is correct straight 4 ohm, I will check for the protect light. If not any of these, any other ideas??

If these subs are in a box, has a wire come loose on the inside?

Make sure the amp is turning on...

Sounds like a remote wire issue.

You can always "jump" the remote wire with juice from the 12V+ to check this theory.

he has got the subs in separate boxes, that is the way he bought them and he hasn't changed them.

The amp is turning on, the power led was on we may have to try the 12V+ jump though.

Just throwing something out there, what if the RCA's were crossed, there would still be sound right??

Thanks,

Well if your certain the amps on and not in protect...

Does the unit have a feature to turn the RCAs off?

Check for voltage on the RCAs... Start at the amp, unplug test. If none check at the head unit. if none, its the head. if theres voltage its the RCA wire.

If theres voltage at the amp then it must be the amp or wiring to the speakers.

The head unit doesn't have that feature. The only thing he told me today other than it not working is, monday after I fixed it the first time, he said he bumped the remote and it went thru all the different sources and back to CD and he said he didn't have sound from his subs after that.

I won't see him till saturday but I will check the voltages then.

He did a very bad install job, I mean bad. If his remote wire is grounding out somewhere, he would still have power right??

check to make sure you dont have the head units rcas set to high pass and the amps crossover set to low pass. otherwise youd be sending the amp frequencies that are being filtered out by the amp.....

That is true, but he had the crossover set to highpass, and it did nothing, then I swithced it to low pass and still nothing. I think it could be the remote as was suggested earlier, because he ran the remote around the back and out through the glovebox, so I am thinking it may have gotten pinched.

I will see him saturday and I will check all this.
