No that's not a typo... there is a local guy from around here competing for Progressive's 10 million dollar milage X-prize.
It was in the local newspaper today... He is a 48 year old engineer and built this at home, 1986 Mustang that now has 400horsepower/ 500lbs Torque/ and 80MPG.
Here's the whole article for your reading pleasure: http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080701/BUSINESS02/807010341
Yeah I'd love to know what he did too... And although he's still 20mpg away from that goal of 100mpg... He's using a real world application, I mean who really wants an electric car that will only go 40-100 miles per day, or a hybrid that has a 0-60 time of 11-12 seconds... Not I! I want something that has the power to merge into traffic on the freeway, play checkers in and outta traffic with a Porsche',drive down and vist Terry, burn rubber in his parking lot, then drive back home... All on 1 tank of gas... That's what I want
My car's tiny engine may get 30 mpg, but when i draw a lot of current i can actually feel the car slow slightly. 80 mpg, 400 hp, thats a slap in the face of tiny, foreign cars.
For sure on turning the 300amp alt
And no idea on costs, but it would seem somewhat realistic since the guy is a 3rd generation tinkerer (as stated in the article) and that he's designed all of this at home (electronics and all)... And on a 86 Mustang, so it must be within somewhat of a reasonable range.
thats pretty remarkable... Now to think... He spent 1.4mil just pursuing patents... You would have to imagine that he has worked on this for a while. I have to hope that some day his technology gets integrated into cars...
This pretty much bolsters the claims that the Auto industry is completely capable of real world application of this technology but are so controlled by oil company kick backs that they just buy off this technology so they can keep making record profits.
I would love to get that kind of mileage in my car :)

he may be closer than we know it, he said that if he used gasoline that the efficiency rating of that engine would be even higher, possibly giving him another 5-10mpg.
