questions about my sub

Post by Tim »

I have an Infinity Kappa 124.7 DVC. (Selectable impedance of 2 or 8 ohms).
It is rated at 350 watts rms, both coils.

I got my first one and ran it with a punch 500a2, broke it in per man. specs, and started using it. After about 10 months of use the coil started failing. I never ran it hard and I had it installed in around a 1 cu.ft box.

I returned it to Crutchfield, and they sent me another one.

My question is was the amp to powerful?? Or did I just get a bad sub the first time around?? I wanted some input before I downgraded my amp or what not.

I emailed Rockford and their tech said that amp probably did more like 600-700 watts 4 ohm bridged.

Can y'all give me some input??

Which did you wire it for? (2 or 8 ohms)

And if its producing 6-700 Watts @ 4 Ohms think of what its doing at 2 Ohms... If its even 2 Ohm stable.

Im gonna say its blown due to miss use.

I had it wired for 8 ohms, I guess I forgot to mention that. So that being said would it be fair to say the amp was actually running half of what it is rated for at 4 ohm bridged??

The amp is rated at 125x2 @ 4 ohms, and 250x2 @2 ohms, 500x1 bridged mono@ 4 ohms.

The tech from Rockford said it would probably do around 600 watts 4 ohm bridged ( I went back and checked the email).

I need help,

Tim

1. sounds like a faulty sub.
2. imagine that a company tells you it does more power
3. that sub probably saw max 350 watts
4. you could have clipped it but sounds like a faulty sub.

I am thinking a faulty sub also. I talked to the rep at Crutchfield when I sent it back and he didn't act like I overpowered it. The 350 watt RMS is for both coils combined. Each coil would be 175 watts.

I really don't think I clipped it because it sounded too clear, even at higher volumes. I never ran the sub hard though. The gain on the amp was set around 1/3. I haven't hooked the other one up to try it because I was waiting to get some opinions.

Thanks for all the help guys,

Tim
