Venting enclosure below recommended min. vol.

Post by neonblack »

Can you port a sub enclosure which is below the minimum recommended ported volume or is it a bad idea? Just curious.
I have an 8" sub in a 0.5 cu. ft sealed enclosure (recommended sealed min.=0.4 cu. ft.) and the recommended vented enclosure volume=0.8 cu. ft.

vented enclosures are larger than sealed for a reason. they need the air volume for suspension, and for tuning the port.
this is why you can't just cut a hole in a sealed box and port it.
just build a new enclosure. it's worth the effort.

I've seen this tryed many a times in the past by the car audio novice... They heard that vented/ ported enclosures get louder, so they add a port... always sounds like crap (and they actually wonder why), and a few I've seen have actually locked up their subs.
As Glass recommended, build (or have someone build) a proper vented/ ported enclosure and save yourself a lot of headaches later ;)

That's what I thought. Someone in another forum said "you can port anything" which I questioned. I know manufacturers make recommendations based on testing/research, etc.

And even the manufactures recommendations are only a baseline, but a far better judge than someone that tells you that you can port anything.

Yes, butt enclosures use a different form of pressure though as it a gas and not just a regular air movement... to be more regular... try some bran ;)
