I took out the in-line battery, would you think i still needed a cap. What should i look for?

A second battery helps but just realize that you need to allow your alternator to recharge that battery over time. if you do a lot of heavy pounding for long periods of time then you need to upgrade your alternator.

A capacitor is nothing more than a bandaid (if even that)... This FAQ will give you some better guidelines about the proper use and mis-uses of capacitors:
